The history of binoculars in Two Rivers, Wisconsin started as early as 1857. William Melcher, a farmer from Two Rivers, WI bought a set of binoculars from Nicholas-Jacques Conte at the Saint John's wig store in Milwaukee. The first recorded use of binoculars in Two Rivers was on November 3rd, 1857 when one Mr. Fenton used his new set to view the approaching Canadian military forces during their invasion of America. In 1898, Leland Stanford purchased a farm adjacent to Two Rivers and began using his newly acquired land to propagate rice farming. Soon after, he began importuning farmers for new sites for rice plantations and soon enough, he had an extensive acreage devoted to growing rice. By 1915, some 5800 acres were dedicated to rice farming in Two Rivers County alone and by 1926 it had increased to over 12000 acres! However, not all farmers in Two Rivers were so dedicated to rice farming; some began using binoculars strictly for hunting/fishing purposes. Some time later (1927), Oneida County established its own police department which necessitated the purchase of more powerful telescopes for use by officers. As fate would have it, these telescopes came equipped withbinocular lenses! From here on out, hunting and fishing became even more important than rice farming in 2Rivers – until finally the advent of jet paradoxes doomed this activity altogether! Although there are many stories associated withbinoculars in Wisconsin history (and throughout America!), there is no denying that they have played an incredibly important role both literally and figuratively throughout our state’s past few centuries! In 1940, Two Rivers merged with nearby Iron Mountain to form a larger community known as Iron Mountain-Two Rivers.
