It has been said that the first lightbulbs were lit with candles in 1847. And, according to some, it was a British cavalry officer named Sir Humphrey Davy who invented the incandescent lamp in 1837. The first self-luminous devices were designed by George Stephenson and James Watt in 1814. However, these devices were not functional until after they had been improved and developed by John Robert Stroud and others. When American Stephen Austin discovered oil wells in Texas in 1836, he set off a series of explosions that created an artificial light source that we now call dynamite. This natural gas flame allowed men to see at night for the first time. The discovery of oil also led to the development of early electric generators which could power lights without hooked up to any kind of power grid or batteries. In 1906, Italian Luigi Fabbri patented an illumination system using a Fresnel lens and a “cat” eye reflector on a pivoting armature. He called this device the "Fresnel Lens Lamp." This became the world's first true self-luminating device when it was introduced into use by Edison at his famous Menlo Park laboratory on October 17, 1888. Sussex is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 6,657 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–West Allis metropolitan area. Sussex is located on the Fox River, about north of Green Bay and east of Milwaukee. The first permanent settler in Sussex was Abraham Morse in 1812. In 1833, John Houser arrived and founded what would become known as Houser's Mills; he also built a gristmill there which still stands today. In 1839, Augustus Woodward established a sawmill and gristmill near present-day Superior Avenue and County Road K in what would become Sussex Township. The first post office was established in 1841, and the township was organized on April 14, 1850 under Act No. 9 of that year. In 1862, two brothers named George Wirth bought land along the Fox River for $10 per acre from Peter Cramer; they soon began to build a cotton gin and distillery thereon called Wirth & Company; this became one of the largest cotton mills in Wisconsin until it closed its doors in 1975. In 1865, an act created Sussex County; it was divided into townships on February 15, 1872 (the date when county boundaries were set). On May 2nd of that year (just three days after being formed), Sussex Township had its first meeting; it consisted of only five residents with no voting privileges whatsoever! The township did not vest more powers until 1912 when Voters' Charter Nos 1-3 were ratified by referendum ballot vote! On November 3rd 1860 – just one day before Wisconsin Statehood Day – Arlington Church was dedicated to promote democracy throughout America by hosting a national Convention for Congregationalists from all over America with representatives from every state/ Territory then existing! This event marked both an important milestone for Sussex as well asWisconsin’s entry into Confederation as a “State within A State” during this time period! Reverend Ezra Taft Benson officiated at this service followed by speeches from Governor David Dixon et al…it has been reported that over 2200 people attended! At this time too we can say that our community held its own version of “Parliament Hill”! Up through 1916 we continued to maintain our small town feel despite advances made within larger villages or cities across America!! Thank you Arlington Parish who have supported us through these tough times….we are proud to have them represent us long after they leave!!

Sussex, Wisconsin is a small town in the Driftless Area of central Wisconsin. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chippewa Falls, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Sussex were Germans who arrived in 1836 and soon started to erect logs cabins on a small stream that led into the Susquehanna River. They named their community "Neenah" after their daughter and intended it to be an agricultural center for their growing region. However, few crops were grown and the community disbanded by 1840. In 1849, Augustus Sheehan drove a wagonload of goods from Chicago overland to Neenah following what has been described as one of the most memorable examples of trucking ever attempted. It took three days to cover 953 miles from Chicago and Sheehan's wagonloads support suggests that early transportation methods were very different from those we use today. Sheehan's journey inspired other businessmen to start similar ventures as vehicle transport became more available and convenient across America during this time period. By 1861, there were six businesses operating at Neenah with a payroll totaling $10 per week including flour mills run by Hennepin County wheat farmers supplemented with local woolen merchants from nearby communities such as Duluth and Superior . In 1865, Reverend Wm Fenton founded St John's Episcopal Church in Sussex which would become one of the largest parishes in Chippewa Falls area until its merger with another congregation in 1984 creating Great Lakes Parish . In 1916 residents approved annexation by Chippewa Falls Township which created a much-needed market for local farmers while also filling some voids within township government caused by lack of resources . After World War II many residents relocated outside of Sussex due to changes within American society characterized by rising prices for foodstuffs , departure of manufacturing plants (which included many jobs located within Sussex) due to automation etcetera while others chose not move because they found suburban life too bland or challenging . As recently as 2000 there remained only five active business owners out of 2,000+ individuals living in town according to data collected by the village planning board through surveys The decline began about 1990 when tax rates increased significantly followed then rapid growth in volunteer firefighter/EMT services (i.e., AEMA), light industrial development (including several stores now closed), loss of farmland used for agriculture (primarily dairying), increased access road travel distance causing less need for grocery shopping trips away from home etcetera

In 1851, the first white settler in Sussex was J.W. Hinshaw, who bought a farm on what is now the corner of Center and Washburn Streets. One year later, John Prentice arrived from Michigan and built a cabin on the same spot. In 1853, Wm. Dawson purchased land east ofCenter Street and built a log cabin. The first post office in Sussex was established in 1857; it was called Indian Head Post Office because it was located on the headwaters of the La Crosse River. In 1861, John Fenton moved to Sussex from Menomonee Falls and started an agricultural business near present-day Washburn Street and Center Avenue. On July 1, 1870, Albion School District No. 1 became part of Sussex County when it was organized out of portions of Menomonee Falls Township and Winnebago County. In 1872, Hastings School District No as well as many other school districts were formed within Sussex County during a period known as "The Great Localization Movement." On October 2nd of that year, a law was passed by the Wisconsin General Assembly which allowed for election by vote of all school district members instead of individual members appointed by the county board of education
