Sussex, Wisconsin is a small town in the US state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Racine metropolitan area. Sussex is located in southeastern Wisconsin on the southern shore of Lake Michigan and contains many lakes, including Menomonee, La Crosse, and Oconomowoc. The first settlers to Sussex were Swedes who arrived in 1836. They built a log cabin on land that now includes parts of the towns of Waukesha and Racine. The first store opened in 1837 and by 1840 there were six stores in Sussex. In 1865 an addition to the town was made by building a dam across the Menomonee River which created nearby Menomonee Falls Park today. In 1898 Sussex voters passed a school district referendum that established Sussex High School as one of three high schools for students in town (the others being Waukesha High School and Racine High School). With this change, Sussex became one of only two communities within Milwaukee County with its own high school system (the other was West Side[now Milwaukee].) From 1951-1968, Sussex also had its own television station KFMB-TV which served as the primary local outlet for all activities related to the community such as public meetings, elections etcetera until it then became clear that WKBT-TV would be taking over KFMB's operations after having been purchased by RCA in 1968. On July 1, 1854, the town of Sussex was organized from a part of the former township of DeKalb. The first post office in Sussex was established on December 6, 1855. On May 5, 1861, the town adopted a new constitution and became an incorporated village. On January 15, 1865, Sussex merged with the neighboring village of Racine to form a new city.
