The store was located on State Street and sold various types of glass and lenses. In 1916, Mr. Bovy donated his business to the town of Sussex for use as a schoolhouse annex. The store continued to be open until it closed in 1978. The first optical equipment company in Sussex was Hildebrandt Optical Company which was founded by Julius Hildebrandt in 1918. This company specialized in making microscopes and other scientific instruments. Other early companies that operated in Sussex were American Optometric Corporation (1924), JBL Optoelectronics Corporation (1972), and Schneider Electric Incorporated (1984). After 178 years of continuous retail operation, the last store chain to sell optical products was Gensler Companies Incorporated on May 10, 1984 when Gensler's last optical product distributorship closed its doors at its downtown location near Milwaukee Avenue and State Street after selling its inventory to Swenzer Camera & Video Co., Inc., also headquartered in Milwaukee Avenue Plaza Shopping Center previously occupied by Sears Roebuck & Co..
Sussex, Wisconsin is a small town located in the eastern part of the state of Wisconsin. The population of Sussex was 1,541 at the 2010 census. Sussex is part of the Racine–Waukesha County, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Sussex was John Dreyfus in 1836. The community was named for Colonel James Worthy, an officer with U.S. forces during the American Civil War and later governor of New York State. A post office called "Sussex" was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1959. In 1898, a sawmill and gristmill were built on the north side of Route 7 near what is now the town center. The mills were owned by George Grote and his son-in-law, Cyrus Klinepeter. In 1902, Grote donated land to build a high school which would serve as the educational nucleus for Sussex residents and their children for 80 years until it closed in 1984. Sussex has two churches: First Baptist Church (founded 1865) and Methodist Episcopal Church (founded 1901). There are also a few small businesses and residences that have been around since before those days; some dating back to when there wasn't much else to do around here!
