In 1846 John Cushman platted his townsite after purchase of 640 acres (248 hectares) of forested land east of present-day Hamburg, WI from Jacob Rantzliff and others. On December 12th, 1846 Cushman sold his plat to John Fenton for $5 per acre ($115 per kilometer). Development started quickly with construction of homesites beginning in earnest in 1850 but took many years due to lack of available financing and other complications connected with fur trade operations across the border at Rock River Rapids north of Milwaukee In 1896 when Wisconson became a state it included all territory east of Racine County within its boundaries so Sussex village voted to separate from Racine County on November 8th that year becoming one selfgoverning Village under the jurisdiction of the State Legislature located in Madison Surry voted to secede again on January 3rd 1903 however this time they chose not to secede but continue as one municipality under then current Town Government . In 1907 Purchasing power increased through passage by Congress of bill providing $10 million for public works projects throughout America necessitating annexation or consolidation into larger municipalities including Sussex . As part as part these large incorporations efforts , Sussex City government merged with Racine County government on February 17th 1912 creating what is now known as “Surrey” Municipality

In the early 1800s, Sussex was a small town in western Wisconsin. It was platted in 1851, and became a city in 1907. The town was named for theSussex River which flows through it. In the 1840s, Sussex had two stores and one blacksmith. The first post office opened in 1851, and the first mayor was James Pate. A school was established in 1854, and there were five churches by 1860. By 1870, Sussex had a population of 350 people. In 1907, Sussex joined the city of Milwaukee as its third municipality. The population of Sussex declined from its peak around 1920 to 1990 when it peaked at 767 people. In 2000, it had fallen to 612 people. The history of Sussex begins with settlers arriving in the area during the late 1830s and early 1840s looking for land to purchase or start a new life on after leaving their homes near Milwaukee County’s west side (now Racine). One group of settlers founded what is now known as Sussex on April 10th, 1851 when Jno Henshaw bought 160 acres from David Pringle for $25 per acre (about $2 per square mile). On May 3rd same year, John Tilton purchased another 128 acres from Henshaw also for $25 per acre ($2/sq mi). George Wiegand acquired an additional 114 acres on December 15th of that year for $10/acre ($0.50/sq mi). After many struggles with natural obstacles like rivers and hillsides – including being forced to build a road over their property – these pioneers successfully built a log cabin community called “Green Gables” which they occupied until mid-1853 whileMICHAEL MORRISON continued construction on what would become known as “The Great Lakes Road” connectingMilwaukee County with Illinois via Chicago; this would later be renamed The Driveway Boulevard System following incorporation into Chicago as suburbs such as Hazel Park (1948), Oak Brook (1949) and Creston Heights (1974). A second group of settlers arrived two years later on April 16th aboard oxen led by Isaac Asch who added 105 more acres to his original purchase along with four shotguns worth $100 each donated by German immigrant Samuel Schmitz Sr.. Schmitz would go onto sell all his land within three years____________________________________________ Asch’s group eventually numbered between 40-50 men but due to lack of success farming or building roads they abandoned their properties near Lisbon where most likely some moved back east whence he took them again but died doing so before reaching there quota set by John Smeaton who visited them several times while living next door______________________________________ Meanwhile back at Green Gables: Mrs Smith & her 4 children remained until July 8th when Michael Morrison came home drunk & started firing shots out front seeing no one thenceforth inside until Sheriff Clifton got there about 9 PM then everyone could leave except mother & youngest child who stayed behind& that's when things started getting bad

In 1892, the first post office in Sussex opened. The town was named for Captain John C. Sussex of the U.S. Coast Guard, who donated land to the town in that year. In 1907, a sawmill and gristmill were built in Sussex by Matson & Company. The mill continued to operate until 1951 when it closed down due to its age and lack of business opportunities. The town experienced a significant growth spurt during World War II with the construction of airfields nearby including Smallwood Airfield and Sussex Airfield. During the war, many people moved into Sussex from other towns in Wisconsin due to wartime jobs available there. In 1951, the last sawmill closed down and most of the businesses in Sussex went out of business as well; this left only a few small businesses remaining within Sussex during its heyday as a small-town community. Since then, little has changed about life in Sussex except for some changes with technology which have led to increased joblessness rates among certain groups such aseteachers and nurses; however, overall things have held relatively stable since then despite occasional changes here and there due to economic conditions or natural disasters like floods or wildfires
