In 1907, a company was organized to develop oil wells near Brighton that would become one of surrey's main industries throughout the years. The discovery of oil led to increased development in Sussex County and made it one of America's leading agricultural counties by World War I. During World War II much production took place at local plants such as Carrier Corp., General Motors and Ford Motor Co.'s Rouge plant in Essexville.
On October 1, 1839, the first permanent settlement in Sussex was made when a group of pioneers from Michigan Territory arrived on the Waukesha River. The town began as a small village and grew slowly over the next few years, until it became a small community with a population of about seventy-five in 1845. In 1850, Brighton Township was established adjacent to Sussex and its growth continued. By 1860, there were more than two hundred people living in Sussex. The town's growth slowed after that year as new settlers arriving from Illinois and Iowa moved into the area. By 1870, only sixty-four people lived in Sussex while it had a population of just ninety-six. In 1875, Sussex merged with neighboring Brighton Township to become one municipality. In 1892, the first school opened in Sussex and remained in operation until 1978. The present day high school was built following a campaign led by then Mayor John Dickey in 1984. It is one of the most recent buildings constructed within the township since its establishment. In 1907, an electrical substation was erected at what is now Washington Avenue and Sixty Second Street which served both Brighton Township and Sussex itself until 1966 when it was converted into an apartment complex known today as Pershing Place Apartments. By 1920, there were only twelve residents living in Brighton Township while it had a population of just seventy-eight; by 1930 there were only six residents remaining while its population decreased to thirty-seven before declining further to twenty-one by 1940; and by 1950 only five residents remained while its population declined to fifteen before disappearing completely within seven years). The last resident died within three months of his move due to complications from leukemia at age eighty-eight on September 28th, 1955; all other occupants of Pershing Place Apartments vacated during that time period also died due to illness or accident including four children who would later attend nearby Mount Zion Lutheran School (now known as Mount Zion Middle School).
