In 1865, James Fenton moved to Surrey from Muskegon Heights and began farming land that he later donated to the community for use as public lands. In 1880, Jotham Hennepin opened a general store here which soon became one of the most important businesses in Surrey. This store played an important role in developing the town into what it is today with its many grocery stores, restaurants, and other businesses serving the local community well into recent times!

It operated for one year before being closed due to financial difficulties. In 1923, the first doctor of medicine arrived in Sussex and began practicing there. He continued to practice until his death in 1945. In 1951, the first high school opened in Sussex and it operated for one year before being closed due to financial problems. In 1969, the last public school closed in Sussex and it is now an private school.
