The first European settlers in Sussex were Methodists from North Carolina. They arrived in 1854 and started a Methodist church on the original beach. The town was platted in 1858 by Jno. Crouse, a geologist with the Central Pacific Railroad. When railroad tracks were extended to Hastings County in that year, Crouse decided to move his business to what would become Sussex. In 1865, he donated land to establish a courthouse and jail near his home on Beach Road. In 1868, he donated land further north for school purposes and another piece of property on which later became a hospital. During World War II, Sussex served as an airfield for military planes flying over Normandy during Operation Overlord. After hostilities ended, many of the men who had worked at Sussex airfield returned home and began construction of their homes back eastward along Beach Road; this process continued until 1957 when all housing within range of those fields was destroyed by fire caused by an exploding ordinance test bomb). Today you can still see some evidence of these days when driving down Beach Road: There is one large reminder of how aviation played a role during World War II - an Air Force Base has been built on what once comprised part of Brighton Beach Elementary School! A school was built in 1858, and by 1865 there were six families living in Sussex according to the census. By 1870 there were over 100 residents living in Sussex, including nine farmers and their families who had purchased land from John Prentice at $1 per acre. There were also three blacksmiths active during this time. During this time period plenty of jobs awaited those who could find them such as farmhands or men working on railroad construction sites across the state. One can imagine that life must have been quite difficult for these pioneers when times were tough!
