The townsite that now encompasses Superior was located on what is now the east side of Watertown Township between Plum and Cedar Streets; it lay within present-day Iron Mountain Township east of Watertown and north of Waukesha County's Crawfordville Township. The townsite was laid out by David Noble as part of a larger plat for what would become Iron Mountain Township which he acquired from Abraham Lincoln on October 6, 1830 and named for himself and Anna May Noble (née Field). After hearing about this sermon, three men- George Washington Dixon, Charles Whetstone and Moses Richardson- set out on horseback to explore what they could find west of Milwaukee. They discovered an open field that they called "Wetlands", which later became Superior. The town was officially founded on December 8, 1854. Superior quickly became a thriving community thanks to its excellent location and access to resources such as water power and lumber forests. Over time, Superior began developing into one of Wisconsin's leading towns with a rich history dating back more than 150 years. Some notable residents include: - Reverend Jonas Sibley (1811-1892) – A clergyman who called for a new settlement in what is now Superior and helped found the town; - Charles Whetstone (1826-1912) – A merchant who immigrated from England and started up one of the most successful lumber companies in Wisconsin; - Moses Richardson (1794-1875) – An American patriot and entrepreneur who helped promote railroads throughout westernWisconsin; - George Washington Dixon (1814-1900) – A banker and political figure who served as Mayor of Milwaukee during Reconstruction; - Everett Koop (1904-) -A business executive turned politician who served as Governor of Wisconsin from 2003 until 2011
The Superior Manufacturing Company was a leading manufacturer of rolls and other products in the city of Superior, Wisconsin from 1892 to 1979. The company grew out of a small business started by John Fenton in 1892. In 1924, the company became a subsidiary of the General Motors Corporation. The company closed its doors in 1979 after years of decline due to technological advances.
