Superior, Wisconsin is a town in Walworth County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous town in Walworth County. Superior is part of the Green Bay–Stout–Fox Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Superior were French traders and fur-traders in 1795. They named the town after Captain David Thompson's trading post on the Mississippi River, now called Milwaukee. In 1838, German settlers arrived and named the community Superior because it was upriver from their planned village of that name on Lake Michigan. In 1847, Washington Territory was created out of Canada and included much of what is now Wisconsin; Superior came within its boundaries. On February 14, 1850, a version of the Constitution ofWisconsin was ratified by voters in a referendum; this constitution designated Superior as the county seat for Walworth County. The first courthouse building was built in 1851; it burned down in 1865 but was rebuilt and used until it burned down again in 1889. The current courthouse building (built 1935) replaced an earlier structure that had been located on Main Street near where US Naval Radio Station Maynard stood until 1945 when it moved to its present site at State Street SW near First Baptist Church before being destroyed by fire in 1951 A post office called Superior was established at least 1836; however no mail arrived there until 1840 As early as 1854, two miles west of present day Superior along WI Highway 169 another post office operated under ZIP code 53534: Appleton Post Office (later discontinued). A store opened there about 1861 which still stands today known as "The General Store". In 1893 Springdale Hardware & hardware store also opened there which lasted until 1975 . At some point between 1915-1917 another hardware store (the "Sears") opened across from Appleton Post Office with an attached garage . During World War 2 nearby US Air Force Base Green Bay produced large quantities of munitions needed for war production such as armaments manufacture so many stores closed during those years including Appleton’s Sears which closed around 1945 . Thereafter much business activity center shifted to new shopping malls closer to downtown Green Bay

Superior, Wisconsin was founded in 1846 by the brothers John and Michael Norris. The town was named for General Winfield Scott, who fought in the Mexican-American War. TheNorris brothers built a log cabin on the edge of what is now Superior Lake and started a small farm. They soon realized that they needed more land to make their dream a reality. In 1852, they bought 640 acres of land from the government for $2 per acre. The Norrises built their first store and began to grow crops. They also opened up a school in 1850. In 1865, Michael Norris died suddenly, leaving his two sons behind to operate the business and manage the estate. The boys took on additional responsibilities when their father’s widow died in 1867. In 1880, Superior became an incorporated town with a population of about 150 people. It continued to grow as businesses were opened up and people settled there because of its natural resources such as coal and lumber. In 1912, Superior merged with neighboring La Crosse to form La Crosse-Superior County.(1) The early years of Superior were very difficult for both the Norris family and their townmates due to many challenges including timber shortages during the pending gold Rush era which caused prices for logs to rise astronomically (the equivalent of $60 per cord today). However, through hard work and determination, progress was made despite these difficulties; eventually annexation by La Crosse followed in 1916.(2) During World War II, much progress was made thanks largely to local contributions such as manufacturing quotas established by President Franklin D Roosevelt that gave hope for growth after decades of stagnation; this led directly into post war prosperity which saw average household incomes increase quite significantly (by over 50%).(3) In recent decades however some negative aspects have arisen including high levels of poverty - especially among women - rising healthcare costs coupled with job losses due mainlyto automation; however overall crime rates are relatively low given community size.(4) Superior is located at 44°12′N 97°20′W / 44.*14.*97 / 44.*24.*97 (44 degrees 12 minutes north latitude、97 degrees 20 minutes west longitude).
