In 1868, the first gun target shooting contest in Superior was held. The event was organized by Captain John K. Brown and his son, Captain James K. Brown, Jr., of the United States Artillery at Fort Snelling. At that time, the fort was located on a peninsula which jutted out into Lake Superior. The guns were stationed on an isthmus between two points on the peninsula so that they could be fired over either side of the water. The first gun target shooting competition in Superior featured twelve guns from five different states competing for prizes including cash and artillery ammunition. In 1870, Captains John K. Brown and James K. Brown Jr., along with their respective crews, organized another gun target shooting contest which drew twenty-six participants from six different states. In 1872, Captain John K. Brown II organized a third gun target Shooting Contest which attracted thirty-four shooters from seven different countries to compete for medals and prizes including artillery ammunition and travel expenses to America’s “Great Lakes Exhibition” in Chicago (then known as “The World’s Columbian Exposition”). By 1875, there had been enough contests such that Captains John K. Brown III and James K. Brown IV applied for membership in The International Gun Club (IGC) which later became the American Rifleman Newspaper Corporation (ARNC). On October 15th of that year, Captains John K. Brown III and James K. Brown IV were elected members of IGC at its meeting in Oshkosh Wisconsin where they announced their intention to organize future contests using shotgun rounds instead of cannon balls as projectiles because this would provide more accuracy with targets larger than those available with cannonballs or muskets at that time." When the first Europeans arrived in Superior, Wisconsin, they were able to find no land that could be used for farming. The only thing available was some of the high bluffs that surrounded the city. So, some of the early settlers began hunting and Trapshooting in order to provide food for their families.
Superior, Wisconsin is an Independent City in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It is located in the eastern third of the state, bordered by Racine to the east and southwest, Kenosha to the west and north, and Beloit to the northwest. The population was 934 as of 2010 census. Superior is a small city with a population density of just over 400 people per square mile (157/km²). Superior's economy depends heavily on agriculture; its largest employer is agricultural equipment manufacturer John Deere. Other major employers include AIG Inc., Waukesha County Government, Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, KFC International Inc., and Monsanto Co.. The first settlers in Superior were white men from Illinois who crossed the frozen Wisconsin River in 1836 for what would become their home base for several years until they could find more permanent land. They named their new town "Moses" after one of their founding fathers - Moses Wheeler from Illinois - but it reverted back to "Superior" when it became an independent city in 1903. The name has stuck ever since. The first post office opened at Superior on November 1, 1846, serving residents of neighboringKenosha until 1850 when it was moved to Racine because that community had a largerPost Office than either Superior or any other village within Racine County at that time. The first school board meeting was held at Superior on January 7, 1847 which met under auspices of the Methodist Church before moving into temporary quarters for six weeks near Main Street between First Avenue and Third Avenue due to a lack of space at Racine's Depot on North State Street during that winter season while construction was underway on Racine's new courthouse which would serve as Post Office and School Board Building from 1853-1857. In 1850-1851 there were also school meetings held at La Crosse (now Milwaukee) about 50 miles northeast along Lake Michigan before finally returning to Superior in 1852 despite protests from Kenosha residents who saw this move as an insult because La Crosse had been given priority over them in development projects by then-County Supervisor Samuel Morse.(1) 2) From earliest days until 1893 when Milwaukee replaced Chicago as America's main transportation hub due largely to railroads developing across Central America via Midwest rivers such as the Mississippi River – movement through central Wisconsin was facilitated by boat traffic crossing Lake Michigan skippered by French immigrants called Pemaquidans(2) – travelers passed through locations including today’s downtowns Watertown (then known as Dutch Point), now part of Milwaukee; present day Green Bay; Janesville; West Allis; two crossings points where Menomonee Falls empties into Lake Michigan: One nearpresent day Waukesha Rapids Dam & another upstream near Sheboygan Falls – these locations served numerous purposes including stops en route between Chicago & points east including Madison (& later Appleton); sister cities founded along Isthmus: Buffalo (New York), Milwaukee (& all its environs), St Paul (Minnesota), Duluth (Minnesota), Omaha (& Neb.),[3] Rochester (New York), Syracuse (& New York)), Plattsburgh (& New York)), Danzig (_ East Prussia_)) & many others still exist today primarily because water transportation continues uninterrupted acrossLake Michigan & beyond!

Superior, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state ofWisconsin. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Janesville–Waukesha–Beloit Micropolitan Statistical Area. Superior was laid out in 1837 by Colonel Augustus Dearborn and named for General Lewis Cass (1768-1846). The first white settler in Superior was John Boynton who arrived in 1839. By 1840, there were six settlers living in Superior and two on the west side of the river. A sawmill and gristmill were built near the current site of downtown between 1840 and 1845; they were replaced by a flour mill in 1865 and an oil refinery in 1969. In 1847, Reverend Abraham Morse erected a Lutheran chapel on Third Street which served as a religious center for many years until it burned down in 1933. In 1851, Judge Jeremiah Sibley organized what became known as the "First Western Wisconsin Republican Party" which campaigned to annex what are now Milwaukee County and Dane County into Wisconsin Territory under president James Kappenheimer as part of his efforts to gain statehood for Wisconsin at that time. The party's nominees won three seats on the territorial council but did not gain territory until after Kappenheimer's death when Republicans gained control of both houses of Congress during the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 made Nebraska independent from Illinois which had been ceded to Missouri following their war with that state over slavery issues After Republican victory at the general election held on November 3, 1850, Judge Sibley became territorial governor with power to admit new settlers into what would become Superior County; he appointed Elijah White as superintendent of public works to improve infrastructure including roads and bridges within Superior County In 1861, United States Colored Troops were stationed here along with other posts throughout Minnesota due to Lincoln’scall for troops during The American Civil War When Michigan seceded from US in 1861 due to conflict over slavery Ia Black Hawk Indians began raiding northeastern WI area looking for scalps & plundering homes across border so military action was called against them by Gov Sibley & Gen Wm Halleck this event lead to famous Battle Of Polson where 5 clansnumbered 25 warriors attacked 30 white men led by LtCol John Brown
In 1836, the first white settler in Superior, Wisconsin, was George Washington Smith. The town was named for General James K. Polk and his father who had fought in the Mexican-American War as a colonel. In 1847, the first school was started in Superior. In 1865, the town became a county seat and in 1896 it became a city.
