Superior is a town in Marinette County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Uptown area. The first white person to live in Superior was John Pohlman in 1836. He and his family built a log cabin on the edge of town. In 1839, Wm. Withers bought land near Superior for $10 an acre ($ ). By 1840, over 100 people had moved to Superior from all around the eastern counties of Wisconsin Territory (now Iowa). The community started as a small farming village with only 10 residents in 1841. In 1861, the first school was built in Superior; it was called "Hannah's School". A second school was built in 1865 and named "The Methodist Episcopal Zion School". In 1886, a third school was built and named "The Congregationalist Church School". By 1890, there were three schools in town: one for boys and two for girls. The first black child to be born in Superior was Augusta King on December 3rd 1889. In 1907, when the state of Wisconsin became divided into two parts – the new Milwaukee metropolitan area and Racine – Superior became part of the Milwaukee suburb of West Allis . However, because most of what is now Superior came from what used to be Racine County (including most of downtown), it maintained its own government until 1974 when it merged with neighboring Greenfield . In 1970, Superiors high school mascot was changed from Indians to Spartans after Superintendent Don Herron suggested doing so because "Superiorites have always been proud champions" of their townspeople's football team which had won more than 30 county championships since 1957 (the year that Indian High School left the city to become its own entity). This continued through 2006 when Spartans lettered out 4th-8th grades (.750 winning percentage) while also playing 8th-12th grade varsity football at West Allis High School under then head coach Mike Blissman who left after posting an 8-4 record but no playoff appearances during his tenure due largely to poor play by his players against bottom feeders like Greenfield High Schools
Superior, Wisconsin was first settled in 1836 by Nicholas Wiseman. It became a town in 1855. The name of the town comes from Superior Creek which flows through it.
