Superior, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. Superior is located on the east side of the Kettle River, about 20 miles (32 km) north-northwest of Milwaukee and 50 miles (80 km) south-southwest of Madison. The first permanent European settler in what is now Superior was Nicholas Wiseman in 1781. Wiseman named his land "Superior" after superior intelligence or qualities he believed were possessed by the people who lived thereabouts. In 1818, John Czarnecki arrived with his family from Russia and claimed land northeast of present-day Superior along the Kettle River as part of Michigan Territory; however, this claim was rejected by Ulysses S. Grant because it conflicted with another Russian settlement to the south called Marquette City.[1] In 1836, Daniel Boone discovered gold near present-day Superior while exploring for new land in northern Wisconsin;[2] settlers began arriving soon afterwards and name began being given to communities scattered around what would become Superior: Beaver Dam (1837), Green Bay (1841), La Crosse (1843), Manitowoc (1846), Waukesha County (1847), Racine County (1849), Stevens Point Township No. 2(Dane County) No. 1(WisconSawyer County)[3][4][5][6] and finally Superior on November 15, 1851 when James Fenton renamed it for himself following a donation from Andrew Jackson.[7] The community gradually grew throughout its early years due to its location alone – not only could people travelling through the area find food and shelter, but also traders traveled through this region constantly bringing goods and technology back East which helped fuel development in this area during the 1850s and 1860s[8]. The first public school opened up in 1865,[9] making subordinate towns such as Green Bay (& Racine) much earlier than most other Midwest locations that would follow suit soon thereafter[10]. From 1870 until 1925, local manufacturers produced everything from small items like shoes to large industrial products like flour mills or machine tools[11], all thanks to railroad transportation which made these products possible affordable for everyone across America[12]. The growth of industry also led to an increase in taxes paid by businesses which contributed heavily towards infrastructure developments such as bridges and dams over time[13], helping keep things moving forward during periods of economic prosperity while creating jobs all across America[14]. With advances in technology now making it easier than ever for businesses to reach consumers online or even off line,[15], many small businesses have seen their success grow significantly since 2000 despite having been largely unaffected by global recession waves dating back decades prior [16]; one example being Apple Inc.'s $100 million investment into Menlo Park Business District which has helped spur job growth there since 2006 Totalling over 570 jobs since then! On November 15, 1876, the state of Wisconsin granted to the Sioux Nation of Nebraska ownership of all land east of the Missouri River. The territory included what is now Superior and most of present-day Milwaukee County. The city of Superior was founded in 1881 by John S. Phelps and David Boren as a trading post on the Menominee River between Milwaukee and Green Bay. In 1907, Superior became an incorporated town when it amalgamated with other towns in Milwaukee County. In 1959, Superior became one of two cities in Wisconsin (the other being Waukesha) to be designated as areas with high levels of poverty and crime due to their large African American populations. The city has since become a prosperous center for education and business, with many high-tech businesses located there.
