In 1961, while still a part of Milwaukee County, Superior annexed portions of Waukesha County to form a new municipality with a population of over 20,000 people. Fertilizer manufacturer Dorman has been headquartered here since 1924; American Glass Company opened its first store in 1926; Northwestern Mutual Insurance began operations here in 1929; FirstMerit Bank became operational here in 1951; and IHOP started serving customers here in 1959.
