He and his family built a log cabin on a bend in the river which served as their home until 1840 when they moved to what is now the east side of Superior. In 1847, settlers from Detroit bought 640 acres (253 hectares) of land west of present-day Superior and began to build cabins there; this area became known as "Eaton's Woods". In 1855, James Ritchie erected a sawmill on the south bank of the river near present-day North Bend. This mill became one of the busiest in those days and remained so until it closed its doors in 1906. It powered an early locomotive called "John Doe" used by settlers on their way to purchase land east of present day Milwaukee. In 1857, scows pushed off from shore filled with logs brought overland by wagonloads from Menomonee Falls reached Superior and unloaded at Ritchie's mills; these logs were unloaded onto railroad cars which took them north to Milwaukee where they were cut into blocks and sold into lumber production. A flour mill was built on current-day South Bend Street just west of Highway 54 in 1865; it operated until 1902 when it caught fire and burned down). A cheese factory followed suit on Elm Street between Main Avenue and Third Street (now Washington Avenue) around 1916; that factory also operated until 1952 when it closed because of pollution concerns caused by smelting operations taking place nearby at that time. A peanut butter factory opened up on Maple Drive between First Street and Second Street (now University Boulevard) around 1919 but this plant also closed within five years due to competition from other plants operating outbid us by 20%.
