Superior became a city in 1907. The name for the town comes from John Julius Caesar's Commentaries on the Laws of War (Commentary IV). Superior was named after General David Wilkinson during his visit to the area in 1835. In 1839, General Wilkinson built a road through Superior to get supplies to Fort Snelling on Lake Superior. The town became known as "John Julius Caesar's Town." In 1857, Judge James Mennonite donated land for a school district. The first school opened in Superior on October 6th,1857.
Superior is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Waukesha County. The population was 6,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha Metropolitan Statistical Area. Superior's history goes back to 1836 when it was founded as a small village on the east side of Waukesha County by John Armstrong and others who left Green Bay for what was then Wisconsin Territory. The village prospered until Elias Reddin, mayor from 1847 to 1850, destroyed most of it in a fire that burned for three days. In 1857, Superior became an incorporated town with a population of about 230 people. On December 14th, 1870, it had its first schoolhouse and first library; on January 1st, 1871, it had its first post office. In 1880-1881, Superior built its first courthouse which still stands today; in 1905-1906 it erected its second courthouse which also survives today (the current one replaced an earlier structure that was destroyed by fire). On November 12th, 1918 during World War I, Superior played host to what is now known as "The Great Lakes Naval Conference". This conference resulted in the declaration of war between America and Germany which led to World War II
