Superior, Wisconsin is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,867 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first European to set foot in what is now Superior was French missionary Jean Nicolet on July 17, 1676. In 1836, the Boston and Northwestern Railroad arrived in Superior and began passenger service between Chicago and Milwaukee. This railroad allowed for more people and businesses to move into Superior and helped spur the growth of the town over time. By 1860, Superior had a post office, two schools (one public and one private), a Masonic lodge (the first in north central Wisconsin), a Baptist church (the largest congregation in that region at that time), several stores/located near Commercial Street (now known as State Road 7), two churches with school buildings next door each other on Second Street which became home to the male high school until it closed around 1957-58; three hotels were also built during this time: one by John A. Roemer on Main Street east of State Road 7 opposite Stonington Methodist Church; another by J.C. Mahling on Fourth Avenue west of Commercial Street; an addition to Mahling's building added an operable elevator; four dwellings were built: one by Julius Hirtzmann on Third Avenue south of State Road 7 opposite First Christian Church; another by Rufus Littlejohns on South Park Avenue east of Commercial Street where he ran his bakery from 1865-1868 before moving back to his previous business location when railroads stopped running through town along with all other commerce ThetownofSuperiorwas establishedin1887WhenWisconsinjoinedthe UnionitgavesuperiortothestateofMinnnesotaonthe northwest cornerof its territory

In 1865, the city added a second ward, and in 1870 it became an incorporated village. The village had six wards until it disbanded in 1915. In 1918, Superior annexed the neighboring community of West Allis. In 1951, Superior merged with Green Bay to form the new City of Green Bay-Superior-West Allis Combined Statistical Area (CSA). At that time, Green Bay ranked fourth among U.S. cities with over 200,000 residents; Superior ranked fifth with over 70,000 residents; and West Allis ranked sixth with over 25,000 residents. Over the next few years, as more businesses moved into downtownGreen Bay and suburbs such as Apple Valley expanded westward into Market Square Township and eastward into Menomonee Falls Township annexation occurred from Addison to Arlington Heights to Wauwatosa to New Ulm to Racine before finally settling on Superior which took place on July 1st 1959 under Mayor Harry Ladd's watch becoming an official part of Green Bay Today there are nearly 2 million people living within ZIP codes 53541-53912 which makes Superior one of the most populous communities within Wisconsin . With close proximity to major metropolitan areas Milwaukee , Madison , Chicago , Rockford / Peoria / Rock Island , Racine and now even Oshkosh ! In 1854, the settlers of Superior formed a town government and voted to name their community "Superior." The town's first store was built on Main Street in 1856. The first school was built on School Street in 1861 and the first doctor was appointed in 1865. In 1881, Superior had a population of 350 people and it became an incorporated city with its own government. In 1903, the city developed a waterworks system and began serving residents of Superior and surrounding villages. By 1907, when it became part of Milwaukee County, Superior had a population of 617 people and it remained an incorporated city until 1975 when it merged with Racine to form Racine/Superior Municipality
