Sun Prairie was founded in 1854 by John and Catharine Beaumonts as a small community on a tract of land that they donated to the United States Government for military purposes during the American Civil War. The town's name comes from another small community near present-day Oshkosh, Wisconsin, which also got its name from sunbursts seen in the sky at sundown during summertime. Sun Prairie was originally called Pleasant Hill because of its nice climate and fertile soil. Residents often took walks around their block to get an idea of what type of crops they could find near their homes. In 1881, construction began on what would become Sun Prairie's first post office and store complex, which opened in 1885. In 1907, local farmers formed a cooperative to raise corn and other vegetables for market outside Sun Prairie; this led to development of a large agricultural sector in Sun Prairie over time. The area became known as "the Corn Belt" due to its high levels of corn production throughout many decades. On July 12, 1848, the first post office was established in Sun Prairie. The town was named for the sun which is seen from above in the sky. In 1856, a sawmill and gristmill were built in Sun Prairie. Sun Prairie became a town on October 15, 1865. On November 1, 1870, an electric power plant was built in Sun Prairie and it became operational on November 5th. The factory produced goods for local dealers until it closed down in 1971.
