The first shooting targets in Suamico, Wisconsin were hung from a tree by the side of the road. A group of men and boys who gathered around the target found that they could hit it deep enough to make a reasonable score. They began to use this Targets as their own personal practice fields, but not until 1871 did anyone build an actual Shooting Range on site. The first Rifle range was built by Elisha Gray and his son Samuel, Jr. It opened on October 3rd of that year and lasted for six months before being closed due to lack of funding. In 1872, John Settle purchased the original rifle range property which he used for his own shooting ranges. He also constructed a new Shooting Range which he called “The Prairie”. This Range became operational on October 2nd of 1872 and lasted until 1898 when it was burned down by a casual visitor!
Suamico is a small town in the town of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sheboygan Falls Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Suamico were the Menominee and Potawatomi Indians. They started a trading post here in 1839. In 1854, they built a sawmill on the river near present day Sheboygan Falls. The mill produced lumber for buildings and other items until it closed in 1907. In 1865, John Sargent founded an flour mill here which continued to produce flour until it closed in 1893. The menominee tribal chief named Darrow bought the mill from Sargent in 1906 and operated it until 1971 when it was sold to George Lusk Jr., a lumber businessman from Omaha who changed its name to Suamico Mills Incorporated. The mill produced wood furniture before closing again in 2001 due to low demand for wood products around the world. In 2007, Suamico mayor Marty Junker announced that he would be running for office against incumbent Ron Ziegler because he felt that Ziegler wasn't doing enough to improve living conditions within his community while Ziegler was out spending money on trips abroad with his wife (the then-mayor). Ziegler won handily with over 60% of the vote!
In 1865, three American engineers, George Stephenson, Samuel Woodward and Charles Goodyear designed a new type of target holder that would revolutionize the shooting industry. The Goodyear Target Holder was the first practical target holder design and quickly became a common sight on rangefinders and shotguns. It consisted of two legs that were permanently attached to a stock or frame of your rifle. The aim was then achieved by simply rotating the legs so that they aligned with the desired target. This simple design made it easy for shooters to hold their target at arm's length regardless of its size or shape. The following year, in 1866, Colonel John Brownell patents his own version of the Goodyear Target Holder which featured four adjustable arms that could be posed in any direction. This proved to be an even more popular choice as it allowed shooters to hold their targets in all sorts of different positions while firing at them. By 1876, over 130 different types of target holders had been patented including some that incorporated pistols into their design! By 1912, practically every rifle manufacturer had produced a model or variation of the standard shotgun/rifle Targett Holder system (with or without pistols). These devices were generally used on indoor ranges where accuracy was important and where space was limited. Today, replica Targett Holders are still popular items on outdoor ranges across America due to their ease-of-use and ability to provide an accurate shoot from any position!
