Suamico, Wisconsin is a town in Green Bay County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Elyria Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Suamico was John Hoyer on June 10, 1836. He and his wife had 7 children and 5 grandchildren in the early days of Suamico’s settlement. In 1854, members of the Glass family built a log cabin near what is now the intersection of North 34th Street and West Great Northern Road. In 1865, Joseph Glass founded the Village of Suamico with land he had acquired from Captain Augustus Herrick for $5 per acre. The village became a town in 1867 when it was annexed by Green Bay. In 1890, local farmers formed a cooperative to raise hay for local markets and raised other crops as well during this time period. A mill was erected here soon after to produce flour for local mills and other products exported to Chicago through railroads then shipped downriver to be stored on shipyards on Lake Michigan until they could be converted into apartments or used as offices during prohibition times (1920-1933). A post office called Suamico opened in 1903; its name changed to Green Bay in 1907 when it joined Wisconsin Post Office District #1. The present day downtown core of Suamico developed around this time including many businesses that continue today such as banks (First National Bank & Trust Company) & grocery stores (PepsiCo Co., Kroger Supermarkets). When Interstate 94 arrived from Illinois at exit 9 south just north of downtown on May 6th 1990 significant redevelopment began with most new construction taking place south along I-94 between Seventh Avenue east and State Street west which included several highrise buildings including One Financial Center which has since been demolished but portions remain covered by parking garages redevelopment continued thereafter known locally as “Bank Tower” development also occurred in late 1990s/early 2000s adjacent to Third Ward Library renovation project saw extensive demolition particular within blocks east/west between Seventh Avenue and Wabash Avenue resulting in large open lawn area now occupied solely by surface parking lots largest complex still standing consists of more than 100 stories tower contains over 2 million square feet composed mostly office space consisting primarily of condominium units retail spaces are available within 500 feet
