In 1890, members of the Wisconsin State Assembly passed a resolution urging the U.S. Patent Office to award a patent to Suamico, Wisconsin for an improved optical system. The first patent was granted in 1892, and it featured a gas-fired light bulb that emitted light through a metal tube connected to an incandescent lamp.
Suamico is a town in the town of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,332 at the 2010 census. The Suamico post office was established in 1868 and discontinued in 1961. The first settler in what is now Suamico was John Gault who arrived on horseback from Michigan on July 10, 1838. He built a cabin near the present day intersection of First and Second Streets and named it Gault's Grove after his father-in-law, General David Gault. In 1841, Isaac Davis moved to Suamico from Mansfield with his family. Davis platted out land around what is now downtown Suamico and built a house there which he named "Davis' Grove". Davis died in 1849 and bequeathed his home to the townspeople for use as a public square. In 1861, when Sheboygan became a county seat, the post office was discontinued due to lack of customers. However, following annexation by Milwaukee County in 1896 however the Post Office continued until its discontinuation in 1961 due to changing postal regulations which made delivery by mail more difficult then it had been for many years prior. Today downtownSuamico retains much of its early pioneer culture including pioneer stores such as Pemaquin grocery store (opened January 15th 1870), J & H Yeoman hardware store (August 1st 1870), Wm Atherton bakery (October 25th 1870), Folsom flour mill ( January 8th 1871) along with several other businesses that have since closed or moved away: Sadlier Drug Store( February 1922), Ladd's grocery store(May 1976)), Big Red Pizza Place( November 2005). Downtown also contains an active Mayflower Society museum open everyday 9 am to 4 pm with exhibits about early settlers life and culture as well as period artifacts such as Pioneer ovens and chairs being exhibited throughout the building

In 1837, the first Lutheran church in Suamico was built. In 1851, the first Methodist church was built. The second Lutheran church was built in 1907 and the third Lutheran church in 1912. The present Presbyterian church was built in 1978.
