In 1847, Julius Hirschmann bought land here and started growing corn and hay. By 1860, there were three stores in Suamico: one run by J.H. Kappelman, another by Fenton & Company (owned by John Cramer) and another by Elisha Sibley & Company (owned by Nicholas Snyder). This period marked an important growth for Suamico as a mill town as well as its emergence as an agricultural center with mills producing both flour and lumber products such as posts, boards, fencing rails and other items used in construction

The community enjoyed close relations with neighboring towns until World War II when it became an all-male zone due to surrounding military bases. After the war ended in 1946, many of Suamico’s residents moved away for various reasons such as economic decline or rural life moving out of reach for city dwellers. However, some have returned over time including current Mayor Tom Kapperer who was born and raised here.
