It is said that Johnnie Jr.'s leadership skills helped him start a successful lumber company inSuamico which continued until 1954 when it merged with another lumber company to form The Western Lumber Company. In 1954, Suamico incorporated as a village under the name of Village Hall & Civic Center with a population of just 20 people. Over time though its stature grew as an agricultural center with large-scale hog farms being operated by businesses such as The Western Lumber Company and other local companies; making it one of Wisconsin's leading agricultural towns during its early years. Today there are few remnants remaining from those initial days at Village Hall & Civic Center; but overall it is still home to many descendants of those original founders who live here today: johnnies (the current Mayor), lucy smith kids (current Town Clerk), gary shearers kids (current Deputy Mayor), ellen soares kids (current Fire Chief), david greenough kids (current Selectman) - all descendants working together towards keeping Suamico alive as an agriculturally based community that continues to thrive into tomorrow!

The name Suamico is derived from the Sioux word "sáhkǫmȳ" which means "place of the big, big black bear." The first settler in what is now Suamico was John P. Lewis who arrived in 1848. In 1854, Alexander McCoy moved to the area and began ranching. In 1865, Philip Dabney also settled in Suamico. From 1865-1875, there were eight families living inSuamico. The last resident to live in Suamico was Doctor James Henson on October 15th, 1975.
