Stoughton is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 2,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay metropolitan area. The name "Stoughton" is derived from the French word "streche", meaning "to scorch". The first settler in what is now Stoughton was Nicholas Rood, who came to this area in 1836 with his family and started a small farm on the east side of present-day Stoughton Lake. In 1848, James Purdy and George McConnell settled in what is now Stoughton after traveling through Illinois and Michigan on their way to build a rail line from Milwaukee to Chicago. They named their new town for an early settler, John Crouch, whose homestead they reached on July 5, 1848. A post office called Stoughton was established in 1853, and remained in operation until it be abolished in 1906. In 1880, stoneware manufacturer Jens Jensen opened a pottery dealership here which soon became known as one of America's leading ceramic importers/exporters of ware made all over the world including Europe and Asia. From its inception as just a few storefronts down Market Street until today there have been more than 100 employees at Jensen's company - many still working there today! In 1907 local farmers Isaac Schieffer and Julius Wehner developed a process for making cheese that would become dominant in North America during World War I – using milk that had been pasteurized byproducts from other factories then being marketed as cheeses by American food processors such as Smithfield Foods Incorporated (now Tyson Foods). This technology resulted in products like Roquefort Cheese being introduced into interstate markets across North America – opening up whole new markets for agricultural producers while also helping to create jobs for those who produced them! Stoughton, Wisconsin was founded in 1854 and is the oldest town in the state. The town has a population of about 2,200 and is located in the Driftless Area of southern Wisconsin. The community was named for Colonel John Stoughton, who helped to move pioneers to their new land in what is now central Wisconsin. The first white settlers arrived in 1855 and construction of the first courthouse began that year. In 1857, Stoughton became the capital of Dane County and had its own school board. By 1863, when it joined other towns in creating Racine County, Stoughton had a population of around 3,000 and a cotton gin. A sawmill was built here in 1865 and by 1870, Stoughton had a flour mill as well as three stores and two churches. In 1874, an express train ran through town on its way from Milwaukee to Racine; this led to increased business for the merchants and also brought people into town for picnics and dances at local parks. In 1886, when Racine County merged with Cook County to form Illinois, Stoughton lost its status as the county seat but continued to enjoy some degree of distinction due to its location within Cook County limits.
