Stoughton is a small town in the heart of the Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Stoughton was Nathan Hegarty in 1836. In 1857, John Saylor purchased land from Hegarty and started to build a cabin on his farmstead which he named "Saylor's Cabin". This cabin served as the nucleus around which present-day Stoughton developed. In 1886, J.B. Sleeper organized a group of farmers who wanted to form a village and named it after George Washington Sleeper (1846-1924), one of their number. However, this idea did not take off and Sleeper sold his share in villagehood development to others for $1,000 in 1888. The name "Stoughton" was chosen by unanimous vote of its founding members on December 7th that year as an honor for General George Washington (1767-1848). The first post office opened at "Saylor's Cabin" on October 6th, 1889; it was renamed "Stoughton" on November 3rd that year when it became part of Ozaukee County under territorial government jurisdiction.. A schoolhouse and barn were built soon thereafter; however, it wasn't until 1913 that the first high school class graduated from Stoughton High School - four years beforeWisconsin Central College opened nearby at Waukesha Avenue & North Ave.. In 1916, water lines were completed linking downtown with farms east of town and businesses west of town began opening up; thusforth Stoughton had full access to both northwesterly windswept Plainfield Avenue & southwesterlywindy Monona Street... Today much old infrastructure still remains including: Streetscape restoration deficiencies throughout most parts along Northwestern edge near Monona Street due largely to lacklustre funding available during original program period; Original plans utilizing extensive new street paving may have delayed Village growth significantly instead weathered weather challenges well over 30 years later... A grocery store/gas station/restaurant called The Glicks occurred across from Waukesha University between 1978-1983 where local artists created installations using found materials Taxi drivers used as drop off points for customers coming into town for shopping purposes during early 21st century renovations done within limits set by city planners

Stoughton, Wisconsin is a town in Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Indian word for "hollow" and "stone." The first settlers in this area were Quakers who arrived in 1793. They named their community after their patron saint, St. Hugh of Paris. In 1847, they changed their name to Racine after its largest suburb Racine on the other side of the state line. Racine was incorporated as a village in 1852 and became a town in 1902. It lost its city status in 1951 but regained it as an unincorporated community in 1988. The current mayor is Marty Schaefer (D). Stoughton has several businesses including two banks- oneowned by Wadena Savings Bank and the other by Midwestern National Bank-and two hospitals-One operated by Northwestern Memorial Hospital and One operated by Brown University Medical Center which are both located within about 2 miles of each other across Racine county border
Stoughton was first settled in 1834. The town was named for Captain John Stoughton, a Revolutionary War veteran who helped build the town courthouse. In 1854, the Town of Stoughton became a city and it has been governed by Mayor-Council since then.
