Stoughton is a small town in the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, located in the Driftless region of the United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. The community was named after John Stoughton, who donated land to the town in 1876. The first settler in what is now Stoughton was James Noble, who arrived in 1836. In 1855, John Stephens founded a gristmill and post office there. The village developed around these two businesses and soon had a school and several homes. In 1886, Green Bay Railway developer Gifford Pinchot donated land to build a station on the line between Green Bay and Milwaukee; Stoughton became its first incorporated municipality. During World War II, Stoughton played an important role as one of four Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) sites for troops invading Europe from Normandy. Over 2 million people were displaced or killed by conflict within Germany alone during that time period; many of these residents moved into what is now Stoughton Village. After World War II ended, many factories closed down in southern Wisconsin following technological advances that made manufacturing more automated; however, few if any left Stoughton behind. In recent years, local businesses have revived the downtown area with new restaurants and stores opening up along main streets such as Main Street SW and Locust Avenue NE while also restoring historic buildings such as the old Griggs Schoolhouse which has been used as a library since 1957

Stoughton, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 3,547 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Isaac Stoughton, an early settler who platted the area in 1836. The first permanent settlers in what is now Stoughton arrived in 1836 when Isaac Stoughton and his family constructed a cabin on what is now State Highway 12. Next door to Mr. Stoughton's cabin was another small log cabin built by John Sorensen about 1837 which served as headquarters for the North Platte County detector team during their gold rush days in that area of the state. In 1840, George Washington Carver settled here and set up a farmstead along with his son Augustus Carver and two others (John Wills and James Sheehan). They were followed by other farmers including Nathaniel Thornton, Salmon Pelly, John Fenton, Ebenezer Weiser and others over the next few years until all but one of these had left or been driven out by Indians or other pressures from neighboring settlements around this time (Fenton had to leave because he ran afoul of some landowner’s cattle). A post office called Stoughton was established at this location on April 27, 1840; it reopened on July 1, 1840 following a move from Racine. The community acquired its current name when a school committee chose “Stouffer” for one of its members – Ishmael Ayer (1802-1882), who had attended school here since age 4 years old. A store started operating here by Jno Eisner became #1 grocery store in town after opening late Dec 1860 due to demand from residents & visitors alike! In 1865 Union Pacific Railroad extended its line through town via tracks laid down by local citizens Abraham Lincoln Stricker and Hiram Maxim USNR while still under construction just north of present day High School Avenue; however only two homes were actually built upon this line as part of that project: Mrs Atwater’s house near where US-41 intersects Main Street NW&NW corner today & also Herr Kappes house on Depot Road NE corner today (& both were destroyed in fireata 1974!).
