Stoughton, Wisconsin is a town in Ashland County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from "Stone" and "hatton". The first settler in what is now Stoughton was Ebenezer Stone (1793-1864). He built a cabin on the present site of the town in 1827. The first store opened in nearby Menomonie in 1835. In 1857, John Hinton founded the Hinton Agricultural and Manufacturing Company here with his brother-in-law, William Dutton. The company became one of the most important grain traders in America. In 1902, residents voted to change their name to Stoughton after Isaac Newton Stoughton (c 1755 - 1840), an English scientist and theologian who lived at Greenbush Manor near Boston during the American Revolution and contributed significantly to that fight against British tyranny. At least 10 other towns have had their names changed since then: Burlington (1910), Lawrence (1911), Manchester (1912), Watertown (1914), Waukesha (1920), Racine (1924), Milwaukee Heights (1945) and Appleton Hills (1996). The original post office building still stands today on Main Street in downtown Stoughton—now used as a restaurant—and has served as a local history museum since 1959. The community experienced significant growth following World War II when many young men enlisted or were drafted into the military; this led to new housing developments such as River Oaks Drive which stretched from downtown eastward through rural areas until it reached Highway 5 just outside of town limits. This area remains popular for shopping and summer recreation today; however, much of River Oaks Drive has been replaced by more conventional development over time including single family homesites subdivided into apartments/condos/ villas/homesites etc., also called "River Oaks." A number of businesses associated with early Stoughton Village have moved out onto larger campuses or closed down but some remain such as Evans Drug Company which produced aspirin for generations before moving across Route 9 north towards Madison; Bicknell’s Hardware which operated several stores throughout town before moving its business center to Owatonna; Roper’s Auctioneers which handled large volume auctions both inside and outside of town until they discontinued operations around 1978 due to competition from Internet auctioneers etc.; US Post Office where mail was delivered until 1984 when all bike Delivery became automated using truck technology while still open for customers to pick up mail if desired According to the 2000 census there are currently 2 churches within walking distance of each other—one Lutheran and one Methodist—but no schools within walking distance according to current plans! There are plans underway for construction of a school but these may not happen anytime soon given community opposition

Stoughton is a town in the state of Wisconsin in the United States. The population was 1,592 at the 2010 census. It is located on the shore of Lake Michigan and it is part of the Milwaukee-Waukesha metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrived in what is now Stoughton were French explorers Pierre Marquette and Jean Nicolet. They named their new village after Nicholas Stéphan (Nicholas de la Croix), a naval officer who had explored the Fox River region in 1673-1674. In 1836, George Stephenson founded the town of Vandalia on land that he had purchased from Nicholas Stéphan's widow. The town was renamed Vandalia after General John Starkweather, commander of American forces during the War of 1812 and an early settler in what would become Milwaukee County. In 1846, when Wisconsin became a US state, Vandalia was merged with Racine to form Racine County. The county seat was moved to Racine in 1857, but it remained for brief periods at both locations before returning to Vandalia in 1861. In 1893, Racine County detached itself from Racine County and incorporated as its own entity, becoming one ofWisconsin's first counties. Although Racine County never regained its former statewide importance until well into the 20th century, it maintained a considerable cultural and economic significance throughout much of this period due to its close proximity to Milwaukee and Waukesha counties as well as its location on Lake Michigan which gave it access to many manufacturing jobs throughout most of Wisconsin during that time period
