Stoughton, Wisconsin is a small town located in the eastern portion of the state of Wisconsin. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The name Stoughton comes from "The Hill" on which it sits and means "place where there is plenty of corn". The first settlement in what became Stoughton was made by Daniel Boone in 1792. In 1824, John C. Fremont founded the town on land he had purchased from the Sauk people. In 1836, Wm Hennessey bought part of Fremont's property and built a lumber mill here. He named his mill Hennessey's Mill after himself and General William Tecumseh Sherman visited it in 1857 to promoteWisconsin lumber production."Hennessey Mill closed its doors for good in 1951."

The first settlers were German farmers who built log cabins along the Milwaukee River near what is now Stoughton Corners Park. They started to grow corn and wheat and began to trade goods with other towns in eastern Wisconsin. By 1840, they had also built a sawmill on the river near where present day State Street crosses it. In 1853, Hungarian immigrants arrived in Stoughton and began to work on local farms as manual laborers until they could afford to buy land themselves. The first school opened in 1861 and soon afterwards there were three churches: Presbyterian (1861), Methodist (1875), and Lutheran (1876). The post office was founded in 1865, but only operated for one year because of lack of mail service between Racine County and Green Bay County. The railroad arrived here in 1892 when Green Bay Northern Railway leased the Milwaukee Road from Illinois Central Railroad for $1 million; thus this town became a part of Milwaukee suburbia which rapidly grew around it thanks to heavy industry that attracted workers during World War I (including many women) as well as postwar suburban booms that produced many new homes developmentally since Stoughton had no downtown or shopping center until after 1950s when Interstate 94 came through just south of town making shopping about 10 minutes away by car or bus from downtown Green Bay which then had its own statewide mall with several restaurants/stores including Sears & Roebuck

The town was named for James Stoughton and his family who settled there in 1851. The first permanent settler in what is now Stoughton was James Stoughton and his family who arrived in 1851 from England. They erected a log cabin on the site of present-day Stoughton Elementary School which they called "The White House". In 1857, they built a new cabin on the same lot and named it "The Old Home". In 1860, they built a new home with an attached garage which served as their home until 1901 when it burned down. In 1870, Amos Phelps came to live in the area and began growing apples near where he currently stands on Main Street. He also raised chickens and pigs which he sold to local farmers for food. In 1903, Phelps donated land to become a park that would later be known as Phelps Park. One of the early residents of Phelps Park was John Haggerty who did some logging during Prohibition years while living at 241 Main Street which is now part of State Road 54 (now US Highway 12). In 1916, after World War I ended, many people from across the United States came to find work in what were then small towns throughout America due to wartime shortages of labor caused by war efforts such as Project Eager (the production of canned goods).
