Stoughton, Wisconsin is a small town in the town of Vernon in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Stoughton is home to the Vernon Middle School and Vernon High School which are both part of Vernon Consolidated School District. The first settler in what is now Stoughton was James Hickey who arrived in 1836. The community grew rapidly due to wheat growing and other agriculture activities until World War II when industry took over most of the economy. After repeal of Prohibition in 1933, many young people began drinking and partying which had a negative effect on the community's social fabric. Today, much of the economy depends on tourism as well as government services such as education, law enforcement, and firefighting. Stoughton has been known for its apple orchards since before European settlement and remains one of America's largest apple-producing communities today with production totaling more than 2 million pounds per year according to 2018 data from USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service

The Black Death Gun Target This target was used to help firefighters fight the spread of the Black Death in 1348 AD. It consisted of a large blackboard piece with black cross lines drawn on it, which could be hit by arrows or shot at with guns to create an inaccurate representation of a human body. Unfortunately, this target was not very accurate, and often resulted in many fatalities. The Tower Bridge Gun Target This target was created in 1828 as part of plans for rebuilding London after the Great Fire of 1834. The bridge had been destroyed during the fire, and required replacement money from Parliament. To finance this project, John Boydell designed a large metal target weighing over 500 kg that could be hit by arrows or shots from cannons to create an accurate representation of the bridge。 Unfortunately, this target also proved to be very difficult to shoot accurately; only 10% of shots were successful at reaching its center point). In order to make up for its lack of accuracy, Boydell decided to add features such as a movable span above the main column that could be manipulated by shooters in order to aim better. This model became known as “The Beast” due to its massive size and difficulty in hitting anything other than its center point). The tower still stands today and can still be hit with arrows or cannons (although not without consequence), testament to its popularity back in those days!

In 1846, the town of Stoughton was organized as a village. The first post office in the town was established on November 15, 1846. By 1870, the population of the village had increased to over 100 people and it had its own school. In 1893, Stoughton became a town and adopted a new charter which granted voting rights to women. On February 22, 1903, the town voted to change its name to Stoughton-Waukesha County. The name change occurred because then-County Executive John L. Beattie felt that it would become more distinguishable from neighboring towns with similar names such as Milwaukee and Waukesha. By 1920, the population of Stoughton had decreased to 25 people and it abandoned its school building. However, due to increasing agricultural production in nearby Waukesha County and an increase in business interests within the community, there was resurgence interest in keeping Stoughton open as a small community until at least 1950 when it reopened as part of Webster Township's government services department under newly elected township administrator Robert Padden Jr.. A new courthouse (built downtown) began operations on July 1st 1975 after years of planning by local officials who saw an opportunity for economic development adjacent to their municipal center while also preserving historical significance dating back to before Wisconsin's statehood in 1907. Since becoming part of Webster Township again in 2000 - following an approval from OSHA - all public services are now provided by Dotzel Drive Municipal Services Department which is responsible for all street lights (including stoplights), water service (including sewering), garbage collection/disposal (municipal Solid Waste Authority), public safety including law enforcement; maintenance and repair of Streetscape; snow removal; parking permits; land use planning support including zoning variances; marketing support; real estate investments; streetclosure/paving ordinances
