Stoughton is a town in the towns of Marinette and Waukesha, in the state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit what is now Stoughton was French explorer Jean Nicolet on July 9, 1763. In 1854, it became part of the United States as a result of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The town's first post office opened in 1857. In 1915, Stoughton incorporated as a village and continued to be governed by its own board of trustees until 1959. From 1959 until 2003, it was served by Marinette County government. A gristmill built by Andrew Stevenson around 1830 became the first mill on the northeast side of town and continued to be used until 1903 when it burned down. Another early gristmill was built by George Stephenson around 1840 and still stands today near the intersection of Main Street and Seventh Avenue N. It employed up to twenty men at its peak production; however, it failed due to lack of patronage and closed down within a few years. This mill has been restored as a museum open to the public since 1966. It should also be noted that there are several schools which were named after people or places associated with Stoughton: Addison School (1864), Anna Mathers School (1868), John Addison Stoughtenwald High School (1889), Hiram Sibley Middle School (1911) and Edwin Greenwood Elementary School Annexes I & II (1915).

The first store in the town was built by John Stephenson in 1851. In 1865, the village of Stoughton was organized and began to grow. The population of the Village increased rapidly due to farmsteads being erected and new housing being erected on farmland surrounding the Village. By 1890, there were over 100 residents living in the Village and it had a school, a post office, two churches and several businesses. In 1916, the Town of Stoughton merged with the Village of Wood Dale to form one consolidated municipality which would continue to grow until it reached its current size in 1959 when it became an incorporated city.
