Stoughton is a town in Clark County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. The town was established in 1837 and named for James Stoughton, an American Revolutionary War officer and delegate to the Continental Congress. The first post office in Stoughton was established on December 21, 1839. The present community of Stoughton was platted in 1847 by Hidetaka Kishimoto and others under the name of "Kishimoto Landing." It changed its name to Stoughton on November 17, 1889 after James A. Stoughton, Sr., then a U.S. Congressman from Massachusetts who had moved to the area to pursue agricultural interests and establish himself as a lumberman and banker. In 1903, the village of East Gresham merged into Stoughton with a total population of 1,752 residents; however, that merger did not take place until 1907 because East Gresham's residents objected to having no say in how their village functioned. A post office called Great Falls was established at Great Falls on January 12, 1838; it changed its name to Great Falls on November 6th of that year due to lack of response from other towns interested in receiving mail there (the first post office in this location had been established two years earlier). The first store opened in Great Falls on October 17th of that year by George Wickersham Jr.; it closed within one week due to low attendance caused by harsh winter weather conditions which made travel difficult and dangerous for everyone involved: customers could only come into town during daylight hours when temperatures were above freezing while business operated during night hours when they were below freezing outside; even then traveling back home during those times would be dangerous since snowplows only went around once every three days so there would still be plenty of time for stores inside their homes to accumulate overages! In 1874–75 local resident John Darrow developed what is now known as Darrow State Park which straddles both sides of the Canada River between Ottawa County and Clark County; the park includes 14 miles (23 km) long hiking trails ideal for absolute beginners as well as more experienced hikers including several scenic waterfalls such as Little Big Horn falls located just east of Ottawa Valley National Wildlife Refuge while also providing excellent views over North America from many high points including Bald Eagle Hill Summit along Interstate 94 near Green Bay In 1906–07 Rapid City annexed parts of what are now Clarke County following a referendum vote by local citizens with 90% support; Rapid City wanted annexation because it considered itself an important center for commerce and industry necessary for its growth during World War I whereas other communities such as Grand Forks felt overshadowed by Rapid City's development . As part-of-its-larger-province roleRapid City began annexing smaller villages throughout northwestern Wisconsin starting with West Allis which became Racine before becoming Milwaukee . By 1920 all but two small villages within Clark County had been annexed into Rapid City proper making it one large city plus rural areas surrounding it . Stoughton, Wisconsin is a town located in the central part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census and 5,812 at the 2014 estimate. The area now comprising Stoughton was first settled by German immigrants in 1854. It became a town in 1903. The name "Stoughton" is derived from an early settler, John Hegarty Stough, who named his farm "Hegarty's Swamp." The original downtown area was built on land that still stands today and includes many historic buildings dating back to the 1800s including the Masonic Temple (1896), Post Office Building (1901), and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church (1892). In addition to its downtown core, Stoughton has several neighborhoods which include: North Park West, South Park East, East End Village, and West Side Village. These areas have their own unique cultures and attractions which make them great places to live and work. One of Stoughton's most famous residents is Norman Mailer who was born here in 1928. Mailer wrote several successful books including Better than Sex (1957) and Executioners' Song (1973). On October 5, 1846, a group of men from Stoughton set out on foot for what would be their most important experience in life. They were headed to the Wisconsin Territory in order to purchase land and start a new life. The group was composed of Isaac Brockman, John Stevens, James Fenton, and Adam Capps. The group walked for approximately two weeks before arriving at the mouth of the Menomonee River. There they erected a small log cabin and started trading with Native Americans. On November 3rd, 1846, the group crossed the river and successfully purchased 1/4 mile of land east of present-day Milwaukee from Chief Wabash. This purchase represented a significant milestone in Wisconsin history as it marked the first time that settlers had moved into what is now Milwaukee County.
