Stoughton is a town in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 910 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Stoughton was John Chapman in 1836. There were no permanent settlements until 1857 when George Hennepin bought land and built a log cabin on it. A post office was established in 1871, and the community name changed to Stoughton after James Stoughton, 2nd Viscount Stroud (1792-1865), who served as governor of Michigan from 1865 to 1870 and as president of the United States from 1875 to 1880. In 1898, an oil well was drilled in what is now Stoughton by J. P. Morgan & Co., which led to increased development there and elsewhere in Winnebago County during the early 1900s because of high demand for oil resources due to World War I and World War II*. In 1957, thanks to support from then-Governor LeRoy Miller*, Stoughton became one of twelve towns within the newly created Green Bay–West Allis metropolitan area*; this consolidation gave impetus both to economic growth within that larger region as well as greater social integration across racial/ethnic lines†.* As Green Bay’s largest city grew rapidly during the decade following its incorporation into WI ††*, so too did crime rates* [*]. In fact, homicides peaked in 1990 at 24 per 100,000 residents*(*). In 1837, the town of Stoughton was founded by Peter and Lucy (Fletcher) Stone. The town was named for George Washington Stoughton who had died in 1790. The first settler in what is now Stoughton was John Wesley. In 1857, the name of the town changed to Tomahawk when a post office was established there. After most of the citizens left to move to other towns in 1869, Tomahawk became a part of the new village of Pleasant Hill and remained that way until annexation by Wisconsin in 1902. The first school in what is now Stoughton opened in 1842. It taught students from ages six through twelve. From 1840-1843, school was held at a farm on FM 522 near present day Waukesha County line. In 1865, after voters approved a system of public education that would allow students between the ages of thirteen and twenty-one to attend schools open to all residents, Pleasant Hill Elementary School became Tomahawk Elementary School. A second school was built on West Seventh Street east of US Highway 54 in 1895 and it served as an annexe to Tomahawk High School until it closed in 1945 because OFD could not find enough teachers to staff both schools simultaneously. Tomahawk has been home to many businesses over the years including two lumber mills which operated from 1926-1948 and 1951-1961 respectively; three steel plants during World War II; four boatyards; fifteen physicians offices; ten churches; one shopping center; two libraries; one hospital and one post office since its incorporation as a village in 1902 . Many businesses have closed or been surpassed by their replacements but some continue operation such as Jifco Dairy which continues production today at its original location adjacent to US Highway 54 south of Tomahawk Village
In 1854, the first Germans settled in Stoughton. They were farmers and their families came from the town of Waukesha, Wisconsin. The town was named after Captain John Stoughton, a British officer who fought in the American Revolution. In 1871, Stoughton had a population of seventy-one people. The next year, it became a city and was known as "The Town That Grew". In 1898, the city voted to change its name to Milwaukee because of the growing industrial area near it.
