Stoughton, Wisconsin is a town in the central part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 6,826 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Milwaukee metropolitan area and forms part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis Combined Statistical Area. The town straddles both rivers that form the eastern edge of Milwaukee County - Menomonee and Waukesha Rivers - and straddles a major north-south highway, Interstate 34. Stoughton's history can be traced back to 1837 when it was platted as a village on land granted by James Hickey, an early settler in this area. In 1857, Stoughton became a town under Act 5 of the United States Congress. At its incorporation, Stoughton adopted a new name – Menomonee Falls – after two streams that flow through it: Menomonee River and Manitowoc River. The town site was surveyed by John Prentice in 1858; construction began on what would become Stoughton’s first courthouse in 1860 and post office opened on April 1, 1861 (the date now celebrated as Town Day). The men who built Stoughton’s first mills were among its earliest residents; many of them continue to reside there today including President George Washingtons father-in-law Nicholas Biddle Jr., who founded Biddle Paper Company in 1865 and remains headquartered there today with over 100 employees statewide! The community also enjoyed success during its early years as an agricultural center due to its large amount of corn production which helped contribute to local economic growth throughout its decades as a smalltown. Stoughton was first settled in 1855 by John Nolen and his family. The town was named for Colonel James Moulton Stoughton of London, England. The first post office in Stoughton was established on December 12, 1854. The present post office building was built in 1903 and remodeled in 1978. The original Dutch gable roof Post Office Building is a National Historic Landmark and currently serves as the civic center for the town of Stoughton. In 1916, a group of local farmers banded together to form the Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA). This organization helped rural Americans achieve parity with urban residents through purchasing goods and services from businesses within their communities at lower prices than those charged by commercial dealers outside of these areas. At its peak membership reached over 100 thousand individuals across America! Stoughton is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Stoughton was James Hogg and his family who arrived from Scotland in 1838. Hogg homesteaded on the east side of the river near present day Stoughton High School. The first store in Stoughton was built by John Sweeny in 1846. In 1865, General George Armstrong Custer fought at the Battle of Little Bighorn and died there. His body was brought back to America and buried at Arlington Cemetery in Washington D.C.. In 1876, local farmers organized a grain storage company which became known as The Great Western flour company. That same year, two schools were founded; one for boys and one for girls. A post office was established at Stoughton in 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The town of Stoughton experienced rapid growth during the early 20th century due to its location along I-94 corridor between Milwaukee and Chicago (the "Great Lakes Highway"). Factory jobs led to population increase while services such as grocery stores and movie theaters mushroomed during this time period. However, after World War II began to impact American industry adversely – leading to an overall decline of manufacturing jobs – Stoughton's economy crashed beginning around 1951 with no upturn until the early 1970s when new industries such as computers started taking hold within the township again despite declines elsewhere throughout the community due primarily to Interstate 94 traffic congestion created by burgeoning freeway development south of town center across two major highways: I-294/I-335/I-45W (now I-94) sprawled across most of southwestern Douglas County). As industrial production weakened following economic recession beginning around 2000–2005 especially within counties bordering Milwaukee/Eau Claire then other neighboring counties also saw declines including those adjacent to downtown Wausau – all leading continue declines over ensuing decades culminating by 2010 with only about 60% employment level remaining for many residents although some Still active small businesses have prospered since then making up some portion of their work force within that larger economy despite those reductions; "Stoughton has been inhabited continuously since prehistory according’", according to archaeologist Dragan Popović who specializes...in studies on prehistoric sites located within three miles (5 km) radius around modern day Stougthnton."
