Stoughton, Wisconsin is a small town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 681 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Door County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Stoughton were fur traders and missionaries who came through the area in 1823. A store and post office were built there in 1830 by Captured British Soldier John Stoughton. The town was named for him. A school was built there in 1834 by Reverend Prentice Calkins, who served as superintendent from 1835 to 1840. A Methodist Episcopal church was also built there in 1836. In 1850, the town had a population of about 150 people and a school board with seven members; it had no public library until 1917 when it opened under auspices of the local branch of the American Library Association. In 1862, when America became involved in World War I, Stoughton sent men to fight on various fronts; many of them died or returned home invalided due to wounds received during that war. In 1916–17, work began on building a dam across Cedar River which would create Lake Michigan south of town; this project was completed two years later and made Stoughton one of the most important ports on that lake for shipping goods into and out of Chicago-based manufacturing centers such as Ford Motor Company and Wrigley Field.. The post office closed around 1955 but has been housed inside some other building ever since (most notably on Main Street). Streets named after former postmasters have been established within walking distance of each other in downtown: Hiawatha Avenue (the original name), Frazier Boulevard (named for Amos Loyd Frazier), Hinds Boulevard (named for General George Armstrong Custer), Washington Boulevard (named for President James K Polk), Appleby Place (named for Captain Arthur Golden Appleby) etc.- even though these streets are no longer postal addresses! Today's economy relies heavily upon agriculture including corn ethanol production and forest products like pulpwood
In 1846, the town of Stoughton was organized. At that time it consisted of a few houses and a small grocery store. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s, thanks to various investments in land, industry, and transportation. In 1860, the town had a population of ninety-four people and a schoolhouse. By 1870, the population had increased to two hundred people and a church. In 1875, Stoughton became an incorporated city with a mayor and council. In 1907, the city built its first hospital. The city continued to grow through the years, reaching its current size in 1920. Today, Stoughton is home to over one thousand residents and is considered an important community in southeastern Wisconsin
