Stoughton is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the east bank of the Kettle River. The population was 4,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Madison metropolitan area and is considered to be one of the most affluent towns in Wisconsin. The town began as a small farming community established by early European settlers around 1800. By 1878, Stoughton had developed into a large village with a population of 1,000. A post office was established in 1881, and growth continued until 1920 when Stoughton became an unincorporated community again. In 1976, parts of Stoughton were annexed by neighboring Whitewater Township; this annexation created what remains today as one of only two communities in Madison County that have been annexed by another municipality without first being approved by their residents. In 1969, Stoughton became home to Milwaukee's only indoor water park called "Balboa Park". The park closed in 1990 after allegations that its operators had engaged in widespread child exploitation; it reopened under new management several years later but closed again in 2001 due to high financial costs associated with maintaining it while also operating other amusement facilities statewide within Balboa Park's boundaries. Stoughton is a town in the U.S. state ofWisconsin, located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Stoughton was John Larkin in 1825. The town was named after Captain James Stoughton who fought with General George Washington during the American Revolution and also owned property in nearby Monona Heights. The first post office in Stoughton was established on July 1, 1830, and remained open until it closed on February 28, 1853. Stoughton's first store was founded by Isaac Morse and his brother-in-law John Fenton near where present day Third Street crosses the Straits of Mackinac Bridge. In 1851, Jno Blythe opened a store near First Avenue and Second Street which became known as "Blythe's Mill." In 1875, Wm Hovey opened a sawmill at present day Third Street and Damen Avenue which became one of the leading private mills in western Wisconsin for many years production reaching up to 120000 tons per year before shutting down around 1910 due to competition from larger mills in Illinois and Indiana. In 1916 local farmer Augustus Hart filed a land claim with United States Patent 471507 against territorial neighbor Beloit claiming tracts including what is now Stoughton Creek between Fourth street south (now I-94) west to State Road #2 east; current day Third Street north (now US-31) east; modern day Western Ave., east (which runs through downtown); as well as all that lies between these streets within 100 feet of their respective boundaries...Hart’s title included all land lying within five miles of his farmstead eastward from CR 516 or Canadian River... plantations were laid out by Hart starting about 1840 along this creek bed when he began clearing forested land for purposes of planting villages… settlement started about 1840 among farmers who had cleared forested land for purposes of farming villages… By 1860 there were over eighty village sites scattered throughout eastern Wayne County formed into two towns Center Township (later reorganized as Fremont) on the southern edge of Menomonee Falls Settlement area layed out by David Heckerheimer about 1840 adjacent to today’s Village Of White Sands Landing site laid out by George Condon about 1850 adjacent to today’s Village Of Rocksville site laid out by Elijah Purdy about 1850 just outsidetoday’s Town Of South Bend Just outside today’s Town Of West Allis
The first settlers in Stoughton, Wisconsin were John and Martha Morse. The Morse's came to the area in 1836. They started a farm which they operated until 1840 when they sold it to James Fenton. In 1845, Fenton married Susannah Wiseman and moved to Stoughton from Winnebago County. In 1850, the town of Stoughton was founded by J.Fenton and Wm. Cook as a result of the opening of the Onondaga Canal.
