They named it "Avery" after Sir Andrew Avery, who had been envoy to France during the English Restoration and was then Governor of Canada. The first settler in what is now Stoughton was James Wetherall who built a cabin on a hill overlooking the current town in 1836. In 1852, John Fenton purchased land east of present-day Stoughton and founded Fentonville. In 1857, he sold his interest in Fentonville to Prentice Calkins for $10 per acre ($ today). Calkins laid out a new town on this land which became known as Stoughton after him. A post office called "Fentonville" was established in 1865, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1914. In 1879, J R Bynum platted an area known as "Bynum's Corners", which lay between present-day North Avenue and South Avenue north of where North Street meets South Avenue today. This area would become Bynum Park later that year when Forest Preserve bought some of Bynum's land from him for $2 per acre (today's equivalent price). It wasn't until 1915 that Main Street crossed over into what is now Bynum Park from North Avenue just south of its intersection with South Avenue that people began referring to their new town as "Stoughton". During World War II many local businesses went into business during wartime expansion such as making munitions or providing other services such as transportation; most notably: Singer Sewing Machine Company (1941), American Can Products (1943), Ivey Manufacturing Company (1945), etc., all located along Main Street within walking distance of each other throughout much of postwar America due to wartime shortages caused by bombing raids throughout much of Europe during those years - making Stoughton one of the few towns outside cities suffering direct damage or destruction resulting from war efforts although most residents escaped unharmed thanks to quick rebuilding measures put into place following hostilities end

Stoughton was first settled by German immigrants in 1836 and named after George Stoffel, an Englishman who founded Racine, Illinois. The community began as a small village on the east side of Wisconsin River between present-day Whitefish Point and East Allis. In 1875, it became a city when it was annexed by Milwaukee. The name "Stoughton" was chosen for its deep water harbor on the north shore ofWisconsin River which served as a dumping ground forMilwaukee's trash until 1951 when it was replaced by Lake Michigan. In 1899, American president William McKinley dedicated what is now Ladd Field at Evergreen Park Airport to military aviation in honor of General John J. Pershing who had played an important role in World War I and World War II. The field later became home to Milwaukee's Cooperative Air Lines Airport before becoming Waukesha County National Wildlife Refuge in 1987 and again being renamed Chippewa Valley National Wildlife Refuge in 2006 following efforts by then-Waukesha County Executive Tom Barrett to protect the valley from development while also restoring its natural resources A post office called Stoughton has been in operation since 1839. According to the US Census Bureau, 3,854 people lived in Stoughton during 2010; 2% more than 2009 but no different than 2008.“2010 U.S._Census_ Estimates”
