Stoughton, Wisconsin is a town in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. The Stoughton Covered Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The first people to live in what is now Stoughton were the Potawatomi Indians who named it after their chief, Stougani. They left around 1836 and probably never returned to the area. A post office called "Stougani" was established in 1837, and remained in operation until 1903. In 1857 John Fritchard built a cabin on his farm south of town. He put up a sign that read "Fritchard's Store". This became the first store in town. Other early stores included John Rafferty's Store (1860), Jno Sauer's Hardware (1862), and George Washington Smith's grocery store (1868). The Town of Stoughton was organized under Act of June 24, 1865 by order of Governor David Dixon with boundaries laid out as follows: east side of High River; north side of High River; west side of Prairie; south side of Prairie; and center line between those two lines extending into Madison County across Snively creek thence southeastward to campus bridge over Muskegon river at Milwaukie also known as Indian Arch or Hennepin ferry landing." This act created an unorganized Territory which eventually would become Milwaukee County when it was organized from parts of Dane and Milwaukee counties on November 1, 1787 . As part of this arrangement local officials decided not to erect fences along high water levels so that wheat could be grown within sight by farmers outside the town limits while still being able to sell their product through local merchants. This policy continued for many years until fence construction began on what is now Green Bay Road near Waukesha where industry finally took root during World War II when nearby Red Wing began producing munitions needed for European war efforts. In 1945 city planners decided that Monsanto had developed adjacent lands too far away for farming so they purchased most if not all these properties including Hennepin Island which formed what is todayMilwaukee’s North Side

Stoughton, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was founded in 1851 by Merrick and Alfred Stoughton as a station on the Great Western Railway from Green Bay to Superior. The village name may be derived from "stone-throwing" (stouching) cattle near an old fording place called Stonecroft about one mile west of present-day Stoughton. The company built a station here and others on the line until it was discontinued in 1876; no trace remains of any of these stations today. In 1882, when Milwaukee County became independent, Stoughton became its second town in that county after Sheboygan Falls. In 1903, it merged with nearby West Allis to form what is now Green Bay–West Allis metropolitan area
