The population increased rapidly due to railroads coming through this area making it easier to get products to market. By 1920, there were over 10 thousand people living in Stevens Point with industry accounting for 55% of all economic activity statewide In 1955, Stevens Point merged with Appleton to form one municipality with a total population of 25,527 Today's economy is based largely on technology companies such as Intel and Microsoft as well as agricultural production such as cheese production and pork slaughtering

The fort was decommissioned in 1862, and the city began to grow. In 1872, the first railroad reached Stevens Point, making it a major center for trade and commerce. In 1916, the first movie theater was built in Stevens Point; it became known as the Paramount Theatre.
