In 1854, Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail built their mill on the now-demolished Delafield Mill Site. When they closed their mill in 1855, many people left town because of the Panic of 1857 which swept through North America. However, some re-settled here and started new businesses such as lumberyards and feed stores. At one time there were over 25 mills in town; however, most closed during the 20th century due to competition from more efficient mills outside of town or conversion into housing developments. Today, Stevens Point remains an active community with a wide variety of businesses and organizations including several professional sports teams (NFL Green Bay Packers/NFL Minnesota Vikings), several museums (the Stevens Point Museum of Art & History, Chilton Museum of Natural history), several theaters (including two located withinowntown), several restaurants and nightlife venues such as "The Pier". There are also extensive trails that run throughout the community including portions of both State Highway 7 (CR 5) which runs east-west through downtownStevens Point as well as State Highway 34 which circles around it forming an incomplete ring road system encircling all five communities within its boundaries. These hiking trails have been used for numerous weekend walks since they were first developed starting back in 2006 by local residents interested in preserving open space within these towns while providing access not only to locals but also tourists who come to explore these unique communities

Today, there are three main cheese factories located within the town: Smith & Wesson (Smith & Wesson), Hennepin County Creamery (Hennepin County Creamery) and Fritos Cheese Company (Fritos Cheese Company).
