When Wisconsin became a state in 1848, Stevens Point became its capital. The city's economy shifted from agriculture to manufacturing during the late 19th century as industry grew along railroads servicing Milwaukee and other cities. In 1906, Stevens Point annexed nearby Racine, creating the largest municipality in Wisconsin by area at that time. In 1920, Stevens Point merged with Racine to become its second largest city after Milwaukee. Over time, however, Racine regained most of its industrial base while StevensPoint lost much of its manufacturing output to suburbanization and then global competition; this led to a sharp decline in population size between 1998 and 2006 before rebounding slightly due to new investment and growth within the city limits since then (although still well below pre-merger levels). In recent decades conversion projects have begun revitalizing downtown Steven point which has brought about job creation as well as tax revenue for local governments; these redevelopment efforts are making downtown one of the more vibrant areas in town with some renovated storefronts remaining relatively unchanged since their original construction over 100 years ago!
