Gun targets have been a part of Stevens Point, Wisconsin's history for over a century. The first target was erected in 1892, and the town began hosting Targets Unlimited from 1951 to 1957. Today, the Stevens Point Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event annually ontypically around Labor Day weekend. The town enjoyed significant success at the Targets Unlimited event until 1978 when it was closed due to dwindling attendance and budget cuts. However, thanks to donations and support by local residents, Targets Unlimited reopened in 1984 as an annual event that continues to draw crowds today. Today, Targetts Unlimited is one of the largest Gun Tournaments inWisconsin with over $100,000 worth of prizes given out each year!

A separate village called "Bay City" was founded by French Canadians in 1840, but it failed to take off because of lack of business opportunities and competition from nearby towns. In 1845, General James Stevens founded what would become Stevens Point with land he had purchased at Portage Junction on the Waukesha River. The town rapidly grew thanks to its access to water resources, good transportation connections, and easy access to markets both within and outside ofWisconsin. When Wisconsin became an official U.S. state in1848, StevensPoint became part of Italia County which also included most of Door County including present dayStevens Pointand Bay City

In 2000, the city voted to secede from Door County and become its own independent municipality with a population of about 50,000 people
