Kohlmeyer built his house on what is now First Avenue northwest of downtown Stevens point[2]. The Kohlsmeyers were among the earliest to come to trade with Native Americans in this region during this early period when trade between native peoples and European settlers was rare.[3] In 1846, Augustus Kelley came to Stevens point from Green Bay with his family. He owned three buildings which still stand today: One building across First Ave., one across Third Ave., and one down Fourth Ave.. This particular building housed tavern which operated until about 1840 when it became a store[4]. In 1850, John Lantz bought 1/4 mile (0.8 km) south-west of present day Steven points along what is now Forest Road K7 from Reverend George Madden[5]. Lantz named his property "Lantz's Prairie" after himself[6]. In 1865 Jens Christiansen came to Stevens point and set up shop in an old millrace known as "Old Millrace".[7] By 1870 there were over twenty businesses operating within walking distance of each other in downtown Stevens point including four grocery stores,[8][9] six mercantile stores,[10][11] four banks,[12][/13][/14][/15][/16], seven autos dealerships,[17],[18], six shoe stores,[19],[20], sixteen men shops/factories & twelve women shops/factories etc., seventeen churches,[21],[22],[23], eleven school districts (one high school), five lumberyards etc., thirtyfive physician offices etc., seventy-six blacksmiths massage parlors etc.–a total number not counting dwellings or lots used for agricultural purposes only!
