Stevens Point is named after General George Stevens, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as commander of Fort Snelling in Minneapolis. The town was laid out by John Stevens in 1836, and became a city on December 14, 1907. It has since shrunk to its current size due to suburban development around it. The first European encounter with what is now Stevens Point occurred when French fur traders journeyed down the Fox River into this area in 1634-35 as part of their mapping expedition. The first permanent Indian settlement here was made by the Menomonee Indians on July 12, 1789 when they erected a small lodges near where present day North Avenue meets South Avenue (now First Street). A village had been planned but never built before Captain Isaac Johnson founded it here on November 2, 1831 following his purchase of land from the Menomonee tribe for $1 million dollars from its owners Joseph Metcalf and David Jackson. At first called "Johnsonville," it grew rapidly due to heavy crop production brought about by new railroads connecting Chicago with Milwaukee and other parts of America during that period. When central Illinois began to decline during the 1830s, Johnsonville became an important center for trade between eastern Canada and southern Wisconsin; men could be hired to carry goods overland rather than having them transported through northern Indiana or Illinois
The Stevens Point and Northern Wisconsin Railroad was a railroad that served Stevens Point, Wisconsin from 1851 to 1870. The railroad was built by Charles F. Hendrickson and ran from Stevens Point west to Lomond in Door County.
