In 1862, when American Civil War began, General Ambrose Burnside decided to attack Fort Dearborn opposite Chicago while General Robert Ewing was attacking Fort Wayne nearby; however Burnside’s army never made it across the river to assault Dearborn because he had difficulties getting supplies upriver due to high levels of boats being sunk by Union forces In 1865 following his victory at Gettysburg General Ulysses S Grant ordered Major General John Jellicoe to move his army upriver towards Detroit so that he could cross over into Canada without fighting On November 3rd 1861 general Amos Kendall arrived with 1 brigade under command of Colonel Francis Prentice from Illinois landed at Pierrepont Street jetty near current-day Whitefish Bay - Kendall's brigade crossed over onto upstream US soil unopposed once they disembarked their equipment With this event Stevenage Post Office opened its doors for business on November 4th 1861 On December 12th 1861 post office closed due to lack of customers
