In 1907, Wesson Firearms introduced its XD semi-automatic pistol which utilized .22 LR caliber bullets instead of traditional 9mm Luger bullets. This product quickly became popular due to its low recoil and easy handling qualities. Wesson Firearms would later produce other handguns utilizing this caliber such as the Model 619 (.45 ACP) and Model 601 (.380 ACP). The popularity of XD pistols led Wesson Firearms to expand their business into ammunition production within 4 years! By 1930 Wesson Ammunition had become one of the largest producers of rifle rounds available! In 1935 Wesson Ammunition merged with CorBon Firearms Corporation (CorBon) which formed America's first firearms manufacturer based purely upon ammo sales rather than design or engineering expertise! CorBon would eventually go bankrupt during World War II but their legacy lives on today as part of ATK Ammo Holdings LLC!. In 1846, when large numbers of German and Czech immigrants began arriving in what is now Wisconsin, Steven's Post became one of their largest concentrations. By 1870, many German businesses had closed down because of competition from American companies such as Appleton Manufacturing Company and Milwaukee Manufacturers Company. The area now known as Stevens Point was part of the Town of Racine which was organized on December 12, 1847 by order of then-Governor John C. Calhoun. The town began to grow rapidly after railroads came through it in 1857 and 1860 bringing new business and jobs to the area. By 1870, Stevens Point had become one of the largest towns in Wisconsin with a population of over 50,000 people. Many industries sprang up around thetown during this time such as shipbuilding, printing presses and lumber mills; however, World War I caused many businesses to close their doors or go out of business due to taxation problems associated with wartime production levels. Stevens Point was founded in 1847 by a group of Englishmen. The town received its current name from General George Stevens, who donated the land for the town.
