In 1854, when Iowa Territory was created from parts of Minnesota, Stevens Point became part of it as well. By 1860, it had become one of the largest cities in Wisconsin with over 10,000 residents! With its growing economy (and growing population) came increased pressure on land resources – which led to rapid development around town including several mills owned by local businessmen such as JH Richardson & Sons Paper Merchants Inc., E H Richards Brewing Company (now First Amendment Brewery), Wm Matson Coal Mines #1 & 2 (now Empire Coal Mines), G W Stephenson Iron Works #2 (now Stephenson Iron Works Museum), Chicago Bridge & Iron Co., an oil refiner named Hendrickson’s Pipe Line Railroad #1 (later Mayflower Pipeline Co.), US Telegraph Company line extending into Sturgeon Bay through nearby Menomonee Falls – all contributing to the growth and prosperity of Stevens Point during this time period.). Through combined efforts by businesses and citizens alike, early 20th century Stevens Pointer architecture emerged characterized by large four-story Italianate/Romanesque Revival style buildings: many stilltoday stand as examples of fine commercial architecture from this era within Wisconsin's central city atmosphere.; such buildings include Richardson's Storehouse at Fourth Street/Washington Avenue corner; Hendrickson's Pipe Line Railroad Depot at Seventh Street/Cook County Road entrance; US Telegraph Company Railroad Station / Warehouse at Sixth Avenue/Wisconsin River; Mayflower Pipeline Co.'s crude oil pipeline terminal founded here in 1902; various other small businesses established during this time including Pabst BrewingCompany (#5247), American LumberCompany (#6258), Northwestern MutualLife Insurance company building (#6260), Masonic Temple No 3 on Third street west side opposite Sixth avenue main business district south side - now apartments etc.; civic center completed 1926 followed by Peoples Bank building completed 1935-1937 on north side next to Memorial Chapel near 5th alley east side across from post office - much later burned down leaving only foundation remaining today adjacent to busy I-94 just south of old downtown street gridlock
