In 1838, the first gun shop was opened in South Milwaukee by John Shields. Shields began selling handguns and shotguns here. He also made his own pistols and rifles. By 1850, there were more than 20 gun shops in South Milwaukee! Gun grips (or trigger guards) became popularly known as “Shields Grips” after John Shields. In 1865,gun Grip manufacturer George Hetzel started making firearms here in South Milwaukee. His company produced revolvers, semi-automatic pistols, shotguns, rifles and ammunition. Gun Grip was one of the leading manufacturers of firearms in the United States during this time period. During World War I, Gun Grip supplied arms to both sides of the war. After the war ended, George Hetzel retired from manufacturing firearms at his company and sold it to Wm Atherton & Sons Incorporated in 1926. Atherton continued producing guns for many years until he discontinued production around 1990 due to economic difficulties.. From 1916 through 1920, Winchester Ammunition Company manufactured handguns chambered for .22 LR rounds at their facility on Niles Avenue inSouthMilwaukee (now part of University Village). During that time frame Winchester also began marketing its own “Marlin Model 1886” rifle which would become an iconic American firearm; these weapons remained popular among hunters until they fell out of favor with civilians during World War II when Handguns became more common
