South Milwaukee, Wisconsin was founded in 1836 by John and Mary Ann Whitman. The town was named for the south side of Milwaukee, which at that time extended only to the tip of Lake Michigan. South Milwaukee quickly became a popular agricultural center due to its fertile land and rich soil. It remained an important community until the early 20th century when it began to decline economically. In 1907, South Milwaukee was annexed by the City of Milwaukee. However, many residents continued to identify with their former community and resisted annexation. In 1916, a referendum voted in favor of annexing South Milwaukee but this proposal failed to receive enough support. The city of Milwaukee officially annexed South Milwaukee on June 4, 1936. At that time, approximately 60 percent of the town's population lived within the new boundaries. However, many residents continued to refer to themselves as "SouthMilwaukeeians." Despite this resistance, annexation proceeded and on September 7, 1936 SouthMilwaukee became part of the city limits. During World War II much activity took place in and around SouthMilwaukee due to its strategic location between Chicago and Minneapolis-St Paul). The town played an important role in helping war effort by providing fuel for munitions plants and housing for military personnel; however some residents were critical of how their town was used during wartime. After the war ended in 1945, many people left SouthMilwaukee for various reasons including joblessness or high taxes relative to other nearby communities. By 1960s most residents had left or moved away entirely leaving behind a small core group who continue to live there today
South Milwaukee was originally a French Settlement on the Milwaukee River. The area now known as South Milwaukee was first settled by the French in 1763. The first settler in what is now South Milwaukee was Pierre-Charles Le Moyne, who founded the town of Marquette in 1766. In 1836, the town of South Milwaukee was incorporated as a city.
