In 1892, South MilwaukeeVillage was formed when two villages merged together- North Kankakee Township and West Allis Township- to form a larger municipality known as Racine County. At first, most residents lived in North Kankakee Township because that’s where most jobs were available. However, over time more residents moved into South Milwaukee due to its proximity to Lake Michigan and good schools and businesses opportunities. In 1957, South Milwaukee received city status which made it one of the first towns in Wisconsin to be governed by a city council instead of village trustees like those before it. South Milwaukee, Wisconsin is a town located in the Town of West Allis on the south side of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. The population was 11,584 as of the 2010 census. South Milwaukee was named for General John F. South and his 2nd Infantry Regiment which fought in the American Civil War and Battle of Gettysburg. The first permanent settler in what is now South Milwaukee was Nicholas Sacco who arrived in 1795. His family operated a ferry service across the Menomonee River between their farmstead and what is now North Park Township. In 1836, Jens Ludwig founded Whitefish Falls Brewery which remains one of the oldest breweries in America today. In 1847, Augustus Kelley settled in what is now South Milwaukee and started a tannery to supply tanneries with hides from deer that had been hunted by settlers near present-day Midland Park Boulevard and Wauwatosa Avenue. By 1856, Kelley had built a gristmill at what is now State Street and became known as "Kelley's Mill." In 1865, John Kapp purchased all interest in Kelley's mill from him, becoming one of the largest grain merchants in WI until his death in 1907. On October 15th 1870 - two years after Wisconsin became an independent country - James Irvine set foot on this land when he landed at Lake Michigan on board USS Constitution (the first U.S warship to enter Lake Michigan). He began selling wagonloads of corn from his boat anchored off shore to farmers inland before sailing back home across Lake Michigan on November 10th aboard Constitution again! This event marked not onlyWI’s entry into Confederation as an agricultural republic but also its entrance into World War I against Great Britain; it would be another ten years until America entered World War II along with most other countries allied against Germany (the Axis powers). This village setting served as inspiration for much later author/director/producer David Lynch’s film “ Twin Peaks” set within the boundaries of White Sands Missile Range – just west of where townsquare currently stands!
