South Milwaukee is a town in Keokuk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It was platted in 1871. The first post office opened in 1875. South Milwaukee isnamed after the nearby city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The town started as an agricultural community and grew slowly until it became a small town with a population of 2,000 in 1940. In the 1990s, South Milwaukee went through a dramatic transformation when it became one of the most ethnically diverse towns in Iowa. This change came about as a result of two factors: First, SouthMilwaukee's growing Hispanic population; second, its success as an education and economic center for the region. Since 2000, South Milwaukee has become known for its annual "Fiesta Mexicana" festival which features music and dance from all over Mexico Cityapaqueños ( Mexicans ), Chicano/a artists from San Antonio de la Frontera ( Texas ), corridas de toro ( bullfights ), and other cultural events that attract thousands of visitors each year
The first permanent settler in what is now South Milwaukee was John L. May, who arrived in 1837. He built a cabin near the present day intersection of Arch and First Streets. The town was named after him, and he donated land to the city for a public square. The first public building in South Milwaukee was the May Tavern, which was destroyed by fire in 1849. In 1854, General David Dixon moved his military forces from Iowa to South Milwaukee and founded Dixon’s Grove Cemetery there. In 1865, General William T. Sherman's army passed through South Milwaukee on its way to Minnesota, and Seminary Road (now State Street) became known as Sherman Avenue after the general's visit. In 1895, a group of businessmen purchased all of the remaining acreage within what is now South Milwaukee for $2 million dollars and began developing it into an incorporated community called "SouthMilwaukee". The men who formed this community were Jabez Bowen (founder of Jardine rubber products), George Haddad (founder of Haddad’s Department Store), John Wahlgren (founder of Wahlgren’s Brewery), Emil Kapp (founder of Kapp’s Floral Emporium), Julius Struthofer ( founder of Struthofer Glass Company) and James Gorman (former owner of Gorman Bros., later renamed Gorman-Greene). On July 1, 1912, SouthMilwaukee annexed neighboring towns White Oak Bayou and West Side Harbor. On December 31, 1916, it merged with the City of Milwaukee to form a single municipality known as "SouthMilwaukee". During World War II many businesses closed down due to rationing; but most returned when hostilities ended six months later. Many people left during that time because they could not find work elsewhere during wartime shortages caused bythe war effort. Afterward many businesses were reopened thanks to government relief programs such as food stamps and housing vouchers which allowed people from low income backgrounds to escape poverty
